My sister and I spent nine nights at Sandy Haven the first week of May and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The first thing you notice at this resort is how new and nice the buildings and furnishings are. When you walk up to the front desk, there is a lovely covered outdoor cushioned deep-seating area. The rooms all have modern amenities including comfortable bedding, a beautiful shower (tile was gorgeous), flat screen television with remote, beautiful tile and hardwood flooring, desk, and a dressing room between the shower/toilet room and the sleeping room with full-length mirror, upholstered chair, and double sinks. The beach chairs are ALL in excellent condition with the majority shaded by beach umbrellas. There are about six with shade from sea grape trees. After having visited Jamaica over twenty times and having stayed at numerous resorts in Negril, I can tell you that you will not find a more upscale, modernized boutique hotel on 7 Mile Beach. It was simply beautiful and very tasteful.
Management: The owner, Ann, is a delightful, classy, and friendly lady who wants her guests to enjoy their stay. She is constantly visible on the property and is interested in your feedback and satisfaction. We were given multiple opportunities by both she and Dwight, the also always-visible general manager, to communicate with them about anything which did not meet our expectations.
Booking Process: We used a GroupOn for this stay and were extremely pleased with the rate we paid for the resort. I would highly recommend this method of payment, since we saved at minimum $70 per night by going this route. Jerome was the responsive and efficient reservationist who worked with us. The whole process was seamless.
Food and bar service: This is where the hotel slightly missed the mark a few times. The food and drinks were fine, but they were somewhat inconsistent. Some meals were excellent while others were just okay. As has been mentioned several times, the free breakfast consists of a fruit plate, muffins/toast, jams and butter, french press coffee (excellent) and a mimosa. We ordered room service one night. It was good and the service was efficient. In terms of the bar service, there were times when a couple of the bartenders would not be too quick to acknowledge you. Other bartenders were consistently good. One suggestion I have is that if a guest gets up from their beach chair to order a drink, always make it a policy to bring the drink back to the person at the beach chair. The beach area is small enough to enable this service without a lot of extra effort by the staff. I highly recommend the beach barbecue on Saturday night. The resort staff put on a beautiful dinner with many special dishes. The food was excellent both Saturday nights we were there. The desserts were incredible. There's a live band and great ambiance including special lighting created right on the water. Just gorgeous and very enjoyable. If you want to venture out and try other restaurants, there are several good ones nearby.
Beach: This is always the best part of any vacation to Negril, Jamaica. The beach there is second to none which is why I have visited so many times. The sand is powdery white, the slope of the ocean floor is gradual, the water is calm due to a barrier reef at the entrance to the bay, and the sunsets on this western tip of the island are second to none. Always stunning.
Security: There is a security guard at the front of the property facing the road with an always locked front gate. They are diligent and aware at all times of the comings and goings on the property. There is also a security guard stationed on the beach all night. We always felt safe and secure here. The staff handled themselves with the utmost professionalism in terms of security and safety. One security guard in particular totally stands out in our minds. Her name is Sinclair. She is always there to help guests with any questions and also just to pass the time chatting, if you so desire. She was a sweet, kind, wonderful lady. We enjoyed every interaction we had with her. She works on the main beach. Thank you, Sinclair, for all you do to ensure the guests are not only enjoying themselves and not hassled by the beach vendors, but also for all of the love and kindness you spread into the world every day. I would like to suggest that the uniforms worn by the security guards (outsourced vendor) be linen or some kind of breathable cotton. Those polyester shirts have to be so utterly hot and unbearable in the hot and humid Caribbean.
Pool area: There resort consists of two buildings making it small and convenient. Everything is nearby. In between the two buildings is the pool. This is a nice area in the afternoons, when you want to get out of the hot sun and enjoy some quiet time. Because the front building faces west, there is shade in the pool area every afternoon. We enjoyed our time there interacting with other guests. This another thing that makes this resort enjoyable. Because of its size, it is easy to get to know other guests and make new friends while enjoying your vacation.
Wifi: The wifi works consistently only at the covered seating area near the front desk. It would sometimes work at our room, but not often. Be prepared to walk to the front of the resort to use it. Again, it's not a long walk at all.
Staff: We enjoyed meeting and getting to know several of the staff members. We would like to give a huge expression of gratitude to the following people who made our vacation so enjoyable: Linton (thanks for always being willing to let me play some tunes from my reggae collection by bluetooth on the beach speakers - Morgan Heritage Forever), Romeo (thanks for the drinks and a great smile), Dwight (HUGE thank you for having the ADA ramp installed by the beach bar the minute you saw my knee brace - a wow moment), Loyette, Reds, Genoy, Jakora, and Kion (Stay cool, dude! You are a great bartender.). I cannot recall the gardener's name, but I would like to thank him for working tirelessly to make the tropical foliage so beautiful and a special thanks to him for the delicious mangoes he brought to guests one day from the country. Very thoughtful. Thanks again to the beautiful and graceful Ann for designing and implementing her vision into a gorgeous resort and for caring about her guests. And, a massive big up to the hardest working general manager in Negril, Dwight. We had a great vacation!
