This is a hotel like no other. The rooms are actually rehabbed caves. It is modern but simple at the same time. Most enjoyable. The area of the caves "sassi" is so out of my realm of belief. Families lived in these caves until the 1960's. We toured a replica and it was unbelievable. The caves also housed the animals, etc. The hotel is multiple cave houses co-joined and modernized. The spa is lovely.

This is the most unique hotel in Matera, friendly staff, perfect location, do not go to Matera if you are not going to stay in Sassi. The morning breakfast is excellent as is the geothermal spa. Pay a little extra for a cave room. 1 night here is great if you can get to Matera early otherwise you may want to spend at least 2 here.

The rooms are actually caves some Matera residents lived in until the mid-1950s when the government forced their relocation. Now with completely modern baths, air conditioning, Cable TV, and city center location convience to shops and other attractions. These once slum cave dwellings' rebirth have made Matera a 2019 European Culture Capital City. This hotel gives you a comfortable experience enabling visions of the cave dwelling life of centuries past. The stay included free WiFi and a compl... Read more

The lovely, usually laid out Locanda di San Martino has many different levels, sort of like walking up the streets of Matera itself. I stayed in Room 20A, on the top level at the end of the lane - great location since no one walks past your room. Really looks like a cave, even the bathroom ceiling has a cave-like ceiling. When it was unusually warm in April 2016 and my traveling companions complained about their too-hot stuffy rooms, room 20A was cool and breezy, with double doors opening on... Read more

Sleeping in this cave hotel was such a crazy experience. And the view from out little patio was so special. We were here for two nights. A week would have been better. The staff was lovely and lounging in the grotto was something I promised myself I would do and I did! What a delishous experience!

We stayed in this hotel during a tour of south Italy and thought "what an unique experience". Our room was in a cave at the mid level, the room was surprising warm for April and I would think hotter in the summer. I did not see any ac for our room. The breakfast each day was better than I expected for Italy. One thing that I questioned was the surcharge for the use of the pool which we did not use. But overall, the rooms were clean and the service was very good.

Our family of 6 reserved 3 rooms at Locanda di San Martino which is part of the sassi. The rooms were all clean with high quality linens and I think considered Junior suites. We had requested in advance rooms with higher ceilings and natural lighting and the rooms selected met our needs. Washrooms were large with a separate bath and a shower. There were little patios either right outside a room or a few steps from it which offered lovely views of the sassi. The hotel is fairly new and its con... Read more

Very comfortable hotel in a great location. Our room had a lovely view overlooking the Sassi. The room was very clean and well appointed. The breakfast buffet was good just a shame the coffee tasted like dishwater!

If you're not used to driving, let alone on the wrong side of the road, finding the Locanda di San Martino down the narrow streets of Matera isn't easy. But at least I didn't have to worry about parking because, for a fee, the hotel arranges for a garage to come and pick the car up for you, park it elsewhere in town and then return it when you need it. One cause of stress out the way... We were welcomed efficiently - there wasn't much in the way of friendliness about our greeting at check in an... Read more

Matera is a town of buildings built into the limestone rocks and caves, and this hotel is a series of those buildings. The rooms are not fancy five-star -- that would be missing the point - but they are clean and comfortable, and well you step out of the room (no hallways here...), you are right in the heart of the historic Matera Sassi.(caves) district. It's an amazing site at night. Come here for the experience - it's striking!. And the breakfast buffet is EXCELLENT, as is the service.

This hotel is located in the old part of Matera, down a narrow dead end road. Finding this hotel without a sat nav would be a challenge if you are not used to driving in old Italian towns. I used google street view to identify way points. This made to drive to and from the hotel easier. From what I could see, all of the rooms were cave that had been cut into the side of a hill. The room was a large very comfortable cave with a large bathroom and air conditioning. This hotel is well worth makin... Read more

We drove to Matera, found a parking space, and started walking, looking for our hotel. On the street, a finely-dressed gentleman asked if he could be of assistance (we may have looked lost) and we told him we were looking for our hotel - the name of which I couldn't remember. He patiently waited while I dug it out of my backpack. When I told him that it was Locanda di San Martino, he smiled, and waved us to follow him. We made the short trek to the hotel, where he proceeded to step behind the co... Read more

We stayed in Matera at the Locanda di San Martino for three nights in April. Front desk are very helpful and it was easy to get situated in our room. We booked a Junior Suite. Room itself was a very good size. Bathroom on the smaller side, and unfortunately besides the night tables, there was no drawer space at all. The days that we were there in April were a bit warm and room only had one window. We were told by the management that the air condition didn't turn on until May. They offered ... Read more

This cave hotel is totally unique. The rooms are all different. Down the stairs from the lobby, you will find the spa pool. Wow is this neat. A Cave pool. Our room had some great views but 161 steps to get to it.

Stayed here on a Friday night with my sister. We drove in by car, and the GPS got us there no problem, even through the winding streets of Matera. A parking attendant met us on the street and parked our car while we checked in. The employees spoke very good english, so check in was a breeze. The hotel room we had opened out to a terrace view of the city, and was very clean and charming with fresh fruit waiting for us. Unfortunately, we did not have time to use the spa, but we did walk throu... Read more

Definitely the most unusual and interesting hotel I have stayed in. A deconsecrated church, It is locked onto the cliff face where caves have been carved and other little dwellings have been incorporated into the hotel so there are lots of stairs and narrow external passageways. Fascinating. Our room was stand alone with a little terrace outside and an amazing view over the Barisano district. At night the view is magical with lights appearing randomly in little windows at lots of different level... Read more

Very nice hotel right in the middle of the Sassi. It has Thermae Romanae an experience you definitely have to go through, very enjoyable. Nice rooms, staff is very kind and speaks fluently several languages. The breakfast area is also top with a very good choice of servings. If you come by car they have a valet service worth paying for ; don't forget you're right in the middle of the Sassi. The hotel has no restaurant, we advise Osteria Pico only a few 100m further.

This hotel is very unique! We enjoyed our stay there and know we will not find another hotel like this. The location was perfect, the rooms were very clean, the staff was friendly and MORE than accommodating. Our room was very private and quiet. We did not use the pool simply because we ran short on time. Our entire party had a wonderful stay at this great hotel!

Topnotch beautiful family owned hotel centrally located in sassi with wonderful service. We had our 22 year old son with us in same room but was perfect because his bed was in a separate alcove area. The view from our 3rd floor room had a gorgeous vista of the opposite hill's sassi. Fabulous breakfasts and the thermae were a lovely calming respite. We hope to return!

This is my favorite hotel in the world. Our room was a triple in a large cave room and it was really fantastic. Excellent view out our front door. I loved the subterranean pool, it was the best thing I did on my trip. I was disappointed it was 18 yrs and over because I have a 14 yr old who would have loved it. I cannot recommend this hotel strongly enough, it is an experience you will likely never have again.

A charming cave hotel. The hotel is located in the central part of Sassi. We stayed in a suite type room which is good for four person, I super love the stair that will bring you up to the extra two junior beds. Our room was clean and spacious and we love the hydromassage tub in our bathroom. We drove our car to the hotel and once there a car valet will ask for your car key and park it for you for 15?, incase you wanna extend the next day they will charge you 1.50? per hour. The rooms are very clean and modern. Memory foam mattresses and pillows make for a great sleep. The location is a great part of the Sassi - quiet but not isolated, and beautiful at night. There was one downside for us. We spoke to a couple who came from another hotel to use the thermae pool and were charged 15 Euros pp, while it is 20 euros pp for guests. We weren't aware that you were charged extra for use of the pool (always read the small print I guess) so it stung to be charge 80 euros extr... Read more

We had the pleasure of visiting Matera and stayed in the Locanda di San Martino. Matera is not the easiest place to get to but is well worth the effort. We took a very nice modern train from Bari to Matera and upon arrival a 10 Euro taxi to the hotel. The hotel is charming. The front staff was helpful and we were checked in quickly. This Hotel may be strongly recommanded to everyone who wants to relaxe and try live the easy life. You live in a cave where everything is well organized and beautifully designed. The hotel is placed in the central of Matera and have a nice spa area, with a nice pool, sauna, etc. The breakfirst is traditionally Italian style, which means a lot of sweet cakes;)

This hotel is the place to stay, if you visit Matera. Nice location close to the main square of the city. Rooms are build into the old caves, and has wifi, A/C and tv. However there is no need for a tv; enjoy the silence ??? Everything is nicely designed to fit into the old walls of the cave. We used the spa and got a 50 minutes relaxing massage. The massage was ok, but the spa is a must see. All in all a very nice experience to stay in this hotel.

Stayed in this hotel in the ancient old city of Matera. For a three star hotel this was very good, The rooms are in old cave like rooms, they can smell a bit musty but otherwise very comfortable with tv and good shower and a comfy bed. The room had the most stunning view, during the day and in the evening. The pool in a cave was such a great place to go and relax in after a long day walking around Matera. Magical.

Beautiful rooms with great service. Attached spa. Amazing location in the ancient cave section. Maters is a world heritage site for good reason. Stark contrast of luxury among 7000 year old dwellings.
