We spent four nights at Hotel Porta San Mamolo. The staff were excellent, the room comfortable and everything worked. Breakfasts were delicious and served in a very pleasant room looking onto a courtyard. The only criticism is that we were at the front of the hotel and at night people could be quite noisy at around midnight, but once that had died away it was peaceful.

My wife and I, with another couple of old friends, stayed two nights in this charming hotel, on our way to and from a week in Tuscany. We had found it based on the very positive reviews at TripAdvisor and were not the least disappointed. Rooms are comfortable and clean, breakfast ample and served in an appealing glasshouse surrounded by lemon trees and other greens. Not least, the location is next to perfect - less than 10 minutes' walk to Bologna's main square, less than 2 minutes to a nice loc... Read more

We stayed for 2 nights and had 2 rooms (1 for my husband and me, 1 for my son and his friend). The rooms were great, very comfortable, spacious (I think we each had a classic double), nicely decorated (some rust on the soap/shampoo holder in the shower but all else seemed in good shape and clean. The hotel was about a 15 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore which I'd read in other reviews and while we enjoy walking, this seemed a bit too far out of the action. Many of the places we visited were be... Read more

We loved this small hotel in Bologna. The room and bed were very nice. The water pressure in the shower was not great but was OK. The breakfast was excellent, and they had gluten-free bread for me. Only about a 10 minute walk to the center of the city.

I enjoyed the stay at Porta San Mamolo very much. Fantastic breakfast in the pretty garden, friendly service, a charming room and atmosphere throughout at a very reasonable price in Bologna. The street is very quiet even though it's fairly close to the main square. I'd definitely stay again and would recommend it to anyone.

We really enjoyed our visit to this beautiful little hotel. It seemed like an oasis of greenery as soon as you enter the courtyard. The people were friendly and helpful, the breakfast was good and the room was very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

I found this hotel through the internet and of course Trip Advisor, my go to starting place if I don't have any recommendations. The other guests weren't wrong. If you are looking for a corporate, large hotel with all its facilities and communal rooms then don't come here. If you are after charming, quaint, period features, beams and antiques, pretty gardens, large rooms and to be slightly out of the noisy streets of Bologna but at the same time very central then this is for you. It doesn't ... Read more

This is a great boutique hotel tucked away to the south of the old town but easy walking to the main square. The staff were very helpful and friendly - good English spoken at reception. We had a large room nicely decorated. Pretty courtyard garden where you can take breakfast. Garden was also a great place to sit away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Some good restaurants nearby and reception are happy to make bookings for you.

Great family feel hotel. Very friendly, nothing too much trouble. Private parking. Great breakfast room/terrace. Easy walk in to the city centre, where there are no bad restaurants. The bedrooms are clean and functional and the hotel is perfect as a sights seeing base.

I am not sure what other reviewers praise, or I was just unlucky with my room but this "Hotel" is nothing more than a large Bed & Breakfast. The rooms are very tired and I thought I had entered my Aunties house from 1960. Housekeeping standards are poor and I was very unsure about walking on the bedroom carpet. Breakfast acceptable. Location on the edge of the city centre, so ok to walk into the centre. Would not return however.

Just returned , having stayed 3 nights. Very comfortable hotel about 15 minutes walk into the centre of Bologna. Very good breakfast, attentive staff, comfortable rooms. Would have liked a larger separate lounge to sit in, the photo given is right by the reception desk. Small garden to sit in near breakfast room , seats about 4 people.

We booked a family room. What we got smelled a little grotty (moldy) and was below average. One of the bedtable lights was not working, there were not enough electrical sockets to charge devices... Toiletseat was also broken. No proper bedcovers, only a single sheet. The aircon had a thick layer of dust in the grid. Obviously had not been serviced in ages. Wonder how (un)healthy the air must have been. To top it off, roomservice let our door wide open while we were away. With all our stuff in th... Read more

We stayed here for two nights before the start of a walking holiday. We had a large room on the first floor with our own outdoor sitting area. The room and facilites were from our perspective really good. The room was very clean and our bathroom was large and had all the things you'd expect. Staff were very friendly and more than happy to help out, especially when we needed to find a Gelato! Breakfast was in a dedicated room and you could eat inside our outside. No complaints about breakfast i... Read more

We were in Bologna for a weekend and really enjoyed our stay at the Porta San Mamolo hotel. The hotel is on the edge of the historic district, so it's not super super central but you are still only a 10-minute walk from the Cathedral and the main sites, and there are plenty of nearby restaurants, The advantage is that it's much quieter and access is much easier, given that much of central Bologna is closed to cars. It also meant I could go running every morning in a nearby park. The hotel is a b... Read more

This is a collection of rooms in a very nice garden, about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Bologna. The room we were in was standard but very small so if you like space get an apartment. Clean and tidy but we rate the breakfast at Porto San Mamolo the best thoughout our one month trip in Italy, Greece and Turkey. Very, very good and you are served in a conservatory in the garden with white tablecloths!

We stayed overnight here before flying home. It is in a quiet backstreet in a central location. Convenient for shops, restaurants and bars. The receptionist guided us to local restaurants and we had a great meal within a short walking distance Also we had free overnight parking right outside the hotel and just a 20 minute drive to the airport. No evening meal available, but this is not an issue being located where it is.

I stayed here with my wife for 5 days. The hotel is in a quiet and convenient location, close enough to the historic centre to be easily walkable. There is a marvellous restaurant next door called "Al Sangiovese" which serves authentic and reasonably priced Bologna specialities. The husband and wife team at the restaurant are lovely, and speak very good English. The staff at the hotel are all exceptional, Elisa, Mattia and Sergio were very knowledgeable, helpful and also spoke fluent English. Th... Read more

This is such a beautiful hotel, and so well situated in the historical centre of Bologna. It's built round a gorgeous garden in the centre and the room we had included air con which was hugely welcome to us as it was very hot. The staff were very professional and helpful and we had a thoroughly enjoyable 2 nights here. If I was to return to Bologna - which is live to do - I'd definitely be booking here.

A beautiful little gem of a hotel - however it is bigger than it first appears with rooms in several blocks linked by a pretty garden and breakfast room. 8 friends shared 4 rooms which were all were individual and characterful with generously sized bathrooms. Very good value for money and friendly staff. Only slight gripe was the extremely noisy aircon in one room that made sleep difficult. Otherwise a perfect base 10 minutes walk from the centre of town so perfect for exploring.

We have stayed here several times and enjoy the location, cozy rooms, and friendly service. It's an easy walk to the old center and there are several good cafes in the neighborhood . Lovely breakfast in a garden setting. Wifi a bit spotty but that may improve over time.

My husband and I, along with two other family members, spent 7 nights at this hotel. We could not have asked for better accommodations or better service. My husband and I were immediately upgraded to a larger room when the air conditioner in the first room wasn't reliable. Rooms are quiet and charming, with painted Italian furniture in cream and pastels. Beds were comfortable and clean. A computer is available in the lobby. A lavish breakfast is served in the garden room, and the offerings ... Read more

The Porta San Mamolo is a lovely boutique style hotel situated just inside the old area of Bologna about 10 minutes walk away from the main squares, churches, museums and sights of this beautiful city. We've just returned from a short stay in Bologna, after a first time visit to the city. Before we booked we committed a great deal of time to investigating the best place to stay, and decided upon the Hotel Porta San Mamolo, and what a great choice that was. Wonderfully friendly staff, delightfully comfortable rooms, and a lovely garden all made our stay both highly enjoyable and especially memorable.

This is a sweet hotel in a very quiet area of Bologna. Pretty little courtyard / garden to sit in. Other reviewers have stated that it is a little too far out but we do not class a 10 minute walk to the centre (we timed it) as too far. I think we had a basic double room as not large but having said that it could still accommodate a queen size bed. Bathroom in our case was very small but adequate. I think the rooms range in size quite a bit so worth asking to ensure it meets your needs. Room con... Read more
