We spent four nights at Hotel Porta San Mamolo. The staff were excellent, the room comfortable and everything worked. Breakfasts were delicious and served in a very pleasant room looking onto a courtyard. The only criticism is that we were at the front of the hotel and at night people could be quite noisy at around midnight, but once that had died away it was peaceful.

My wife and I, with another couple of old friends, stayed two nights in this charming hotel, on our way to and from a week in Tuscany. We had found it based on the very positive reviews at TripAdvisor and were not the least disappointed. Rooms are comfortable and clean, breakfast ample and served in an appealing glasshouse surrounded by lemon trees and other greens. Not least, the location is next to perfect - less than 10 minutes' walk to Bologna's main square, less than 2 minutes to a nice loc... Read more

We stayed for 2 nights and had 2 rooms (1 for my husband and me, 1 for my son and his friend). The rooms were great, very comfortable, spacious (I think we each had a classic double), nicely decorated (some rust on the soap/shampoo holder in the shower but all else seemed in good shape and clean. The hotel was about a 15 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore which I'd read in other reviews and while we enjoy walking, this seemed a bit too far out of the action. I enjoyed the stay at Porta San Mamolo very much. Fantastic breakfast in the pretty garden, friendly service, a charming room and atmosphere throughout at a very reasonable price in Bologna. The street is very quiet even though it's fairly close to the main square. I'd definitely stay again and would recommend it to anyone.

I found this hotel through the internet and of course Trip Advisor, my go to starting place if I don't have any recommendations. The other guests weren't wrong. If you are looking for a corporate, large hotel with all its facilities and communal rooms then don't come here. If you are after charming, quaint, period features, beams and antiques, pretty gardens, large rooms and to be slightly out of the noisy streets of Bologna but at the same time very central then this is for you. This is a great boutique hotel tucked away to the south of the old town but easy walking to the main square. The staff were very helpful and friendly - good English spoken at reception. We had a large room nicely decorated. Pretty courtyard garden where you can take breakfast. Garden was also a great place to sit away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Some good restaurants nearby and reception are happy to make bookings for you.

I am not sure what other reviewers praise, or I was just unlucky with my room but this "Hotel" is nothing more than a large Bed & Breakfast. The rooms are very tired and I thought I had entered my Aunties house from 1960. Housekeeping standards are poor and I was very unsure about walking on the bedroom carpet. Breakfast acceptable. Location on the edge of the city centre, so ok to walk into the centre. Would not return however.

We booked a family room. What we got smelled a little grotty (moldy) and was below average. One of the bedtable lights was not working, there were not enough electrical sockets to charge devices... Toiletseat was also broken. No proper bedcovers, only a single sheet. The aircon had a thick layer of dust in the grid. Obviously had not been serviced in ages. Wonder how (un)healthy the air must have been. To top it off, roomservice let our door wide open while we were away. With all our stuff in th... Read more

We were in Bologna for a weekend and really enjoyed our stay at the Porta San Mamolo hotel. The hotel is on the edge of the historic district, so it's not super super central but you are still only a 10-minute walk from the Cathedral and the main sites, and there are plenty of nearby restaurants, The advantage is that it's much quieter and access is much easier, given that much of central Bologna is closed to cars. This is a collection of rooms in a very nice garden, about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Bologna. The room we were in was standard but very small so if you like space get an apartment. Clean and tidy but we rate the breakfast at Porto San Mamolo the best thoughout our one month trip in Italy, Greece and Turkey. Very, very good and you are served in a conservatory in the garden with white tablecloths!

We stayed overnight here before flying home. It is in a quiet backstreet in a central location. Convenient for shops, restaurants and bars. The receptionist guided us to local restaurants and we had a great meal within a short walking distance Also we had free overnight parking right outside the hotel and just a 20 minute drive to the airport. No evening meal available, but this is not an issue being located where it is.

This is such a beautiful hotel, and so well situated in the historical centre of Bologna. It's built round a gorgeous garden in the centre and the room we had included air con which was hugely welcome to us as it was very hot. A beautiful little gem of a hotel - however it is bigger than it first appears with rooms in several blocks linked by a pretty garden and breakfast room. 8 friends shared 4 rooms which were all were individual and characterful with generously sized bathrooms. Very good value for money and friendly staff. Only slight gripe was the extremely noisy aircon in one room that made sleep difficult. Otherwise a perfect base 10 minutes walk from the centre of town so perfect for exploring.

Other reviewers have stated that it is a little too far out but we do not class a 10 minute walk to the centre (we timed it) as too far. Bologna is a wonderful city. An absolute medieval gem.It seems to revolve around food, is relatively cheap and even in the height of summer, not too touristy. We stayed in Bolgna at the Porta San Mamolo for two nights in October. It is an older hotel but very well kept and cool. The GM Roberto was super helpful in getting us on a great food tour as well as getting us into a great restaurant located directly down the block. We hadn't really planned this leg of our visit very thoroughly but Roberto made it one of the highlights of our entire trip. Thanks!!! Breakfast was yummy and located in a cafe area behind the hotel. The hotel is located within shor... Read more

The hotel is located within walking distance of town center! The rooms were clean, air conditioned and comfortable. A good hot breakfast was included and the coffee was really good! The staff was more than helpful!

The hotel is just outside the main hub but only takes 5 minutes to walk to Piazza Maggiore, so perfect for staying. The bedrooms are lovely with a queen size bed and ensuring bathroom. The stag are so helpful and friendly throughout the hotel. The breakfast is delicious and wholesome, with very attentive staff. The breakfast ranges from cereals, meat selection, hot food, pastries and home made cakes! Highly recommend this place!

Booked this hotel through a city break with BA and got a great price. The room was very small but spotlessly clean and the bathroom was more than adequate. I'd read reviews of all the hotels at the lower price end of BA's city break options and this one came out best. Location- close to the centre, about ten minutes walk sees you at most points of interest. But wait, you don't need to walk as the hotel have bikes to borrow (note borrow as in free, not hire as in pay!). I spent two wonderful day... Read more

After traveling around northern Italy for several weeks, the Hotel Porta San Mamolo was our final "home" before returning to the US. We stayed for 5 nights. Our room was quite large and comfortable (I believe they put us in a larger room due to our longer stay). The staff spoke English very well and were all warm, welcoming, gracious, and helpful. The hotel is on the edge of the old town, but an easy walk to everything we wanted to see. We liked the atmosphere and food at nearby Osteria Al ... Read more

We stayed in this very convenient hotel for 6 days. The room was compact and spotlessly clean but unfortunately only had a shower in the bathroom. Breakfast served in a conservatory in the garden was excellent. The only drawbacks were the lift which sounds like an orchestra tuning up (annoying in the middle of the night) and the bimbo on reception who, when I asked for the room key, rudely decided to give it my partner who walked into the reception after me. In Europe, if a woman asks for the ro... Read more

I stayed at the Hotel Porta San Mamalo for three nights. The hotel consists of rooms in several buildings. I had stayed there with my family three years ago and we had a large room in a building a few doors down from the office and our only complaint was the lousy wifi. This time I was alone and was given a very nice room on the 4th floor in a building behind the garden. However, there was a loud party going on past midnight in an adjoining apartment that was not part of the hotel. I was no... Read more
