Yogyakarta is a very pretty yet charming city. The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta is not located exactly at the city center. The taxi fare in the city is quite expensive relatively compare to other same size city in Indonesia. The facade of the hotel has heritage feel with some antique Mercedes Benz park right in front of the lobby. We have been assigned ground floor deluxe rooms besides the pretty swimming pool next to the spa. The room is quite spacious in size, clean, tidy with the touch of local J... Read more

Overall it was a pleasant stay. The buffet breakfast is very good with a great spread .Our room is located at the old block with no view. The wifi access and speed is terrible especially in the evening when there are many users. Location is so so. Not near to Maliboro . 15-20 min walk in the hot and humid weather is quite tiring. Taking the beak cost as much or more than taking a taxi at times. On the first 2 nights there were turn down service but not for the following 3 nights.

The staffs are one of the best, if not the best that i've ever met. This is what the true Indonesian hospitality should be, but alas, the dame hospitality is disappearing elsewhere in Indonesia. The room is excellent, although i think it is time for renovation and regeneration. Last time i stayed was 10 years ago and that was flawless. Breakfast was excellent. I have to mention especially about the Jamu. Not a lot of hotels in Indonesia provide that. I love the fact this hotel provide Jamu ten y... Read more

We stayed at the Phoenix on the recommendation of friends who had attended Art|Jog before. It is a centrally located hotel in Yogyakarta. Upon entering the bright lobby, one can appreciate the old-world charm of the hotel with its European and Asian accents. It feels like a large colonial home but with modern amenities like a spa, pool, and restaurant. My friend enjoyed her massage at the spa after a long day of art visits. Lovely site with numerous places to relax and unwind -- poolside, at the bar, at any of many comfortable tables placed around the property. Beautifully furnished and decorated. Staff was wonderfully attentive and helpful. We'd agree the breakfast buffet is unusually varied and good. However we don't recommend having dinner at the hotel as our meals were only ok and the city is full of excellent alternatives.

We stayed at this hotel for five nights and it was a wonderful home base for visiting many sites around the city. One day our driver did not show up (we didn't arrange him thru the hotel), and the hotel got a wonderful new driver for us. We had our anniversary while we were there, and they decorated our room with Rose petals and other decorations. The restaurant is outstanding, be sure and try the gin sling drink. The structure of the hotel is very beautiful, but the interior needs to be updated (bathrooms, paint, etc). It is looking dated. The location is closer into town and makes it easier to see different sites. Opt for a room overlooking the courtyard as the other rooms face the street which is noisy. I would also pay the extra money for at least the Deluxe Room. We initially had a superior room, which felt very small and sterile. That said, none of the rooms lived up to the 5 star rating. Very grand looking yet peaceful and offers modern comfort. Good comfy beds, strong aircon, friendly staff, majestic (but small) looking pool (good for a dip and lounging and photos). I was referred to The Phoenix because I was interested in experiencing Yogya comfortably with a historic flavor. The hotel was established in 1918 and is opulently decorated in a colonial fashion. The hotel is in real as beautiful as on the pictures. After having spent 3 nights in the hotel, we come to the following conclusion: All ingredients for a great hotel are there, but in the end it is just mediocre because of a lack of service and poor food. + hotel building + friendly staff o room o price - food: the food is really not enjoyable; we ate there twice for breakfast and dinner; neither the quality nor the price are okay. I and my family have stayed at The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta. The hotel atmosphere, as a heritage building in Yogyakarta, is very nice and serves a good place for having a relax time with family. In addition, the hospitality of hotel staff is highly appreciated. The hotel lobby, restaurant and swimming pool are very nice. The location of the hotel is very strategic, in close vicinity with Tugu Yogya and Malioboro, a paradise shopping destination in Yogyakarta.

The good: pool, look, feel & style of the common areas, food quality and variety really good. The bad: really very poor English from hotel staff - with 90% international guests just isn't good enough The ugly: the smell of blocked drains in our room and the faulty air conditioning. Sad to say that there just must be better options (3/5 is erring on the side of generosity).

This hotel is beautiful but it is in serious need of a reno. Obviously you can't complain too much as the price is so reasonable. My family had been to this hotel about 10 years ago which was right after they're last update. The pool and breakfast buffet were awesome and the AC kept the rooms cool. My main issues were that our shower did not drain well and there was a giant stain on my bed sheet the first night. The sheets had definitely been laundered but they should've been tossed.

Hotels in the tropics tend to wear fast due to the heat and humidity and need regular upkeep to make sure a standard of luxury is maintained. Opened only in 2003 it is already in need of a make over.
