Sometimes I understand that people can get carried away when on holiday and over exaggerate things that have gone well. Sometimes I understand that people can get carried away when on holiday and over exaggerate things that have gone well. And of course the reverse is also true, when things go wrong, it's often too easy to criticise on social media platforms. But here's my review. I'm going to try and stay calm about what I say....and to be honest, that's not going to be easy. It isn't going to be easy because very rarely do I ever feel able to scream and shout the praises that I'm about to give for a hotel, a restaurant, a place visited, a trip....however, The Upper House takes the biscuit. It truly embodies everything that is good about a brand that delivers what it sets out to achieve. Puts in to practice what it preaches, consistently, flawlessly and with timely perfection.
From the moment I communicated with the hotel requesting a little information, the service excellence started. I was sent a plethora of restaurant tips and ideas for sightseeing, amongst other things. They wrote to me a week before I stayed there and asked if I would share a little personal information with them. Of course I would, they asked it in such a nice way, why wouldn't I? I said I was a foodie, I liked Dim Sum, I wanted to try new restaurants, I needed to understand how to get from the airport to the hotel, I wanted to do things in Hong Kong that I couldn't do in Europe....when I arrived, they had bought me a little Dim Sum cookery book.
They arranged a car from the Upper House to pick us up at the airport. Flawless. We were met by someone who walked us to the very nice car, gave us drinks, and offered us a WiFi code to use whilst in the car. Excellent. We arrived at the House, and was greeted by a casually dressed team member, who was charming. She took us to our corner suite on the 43rd floor, the suitcases followed. All the check in process was done in the room, on a iPad, whilst we gasped at the Harbour view and the size of the stunning earthy suite. The bed was huge with the crispest, whitest sheets imaginable, the corner sofas luxurious, and the Maxi Bar was stocked with plenty to drink, beers, cans, fresh milk, juices etc, all free, with wine and fizz if you wanted to buy it. There were wooden boxes with sweet treats, a coffee machine, teas....and then the bathroom.....just awesome, with huge windows looking over the harbour, a bath that was central so you can lay there with a Drink and soak it all in....a rain shower....a dressing room....everything perfect....sound system through the suite operating from your own iPhone or other device with all the right connections left for you....lighting mood controls. Huge TV, and a second TV behind a smoked mirror in the bathroom....
Then things just got better. Each night we returned to our suite, a new gift was left for us with a hand written card thanking us for staying at the House. And not just-throw away gifts....smelly candles, a leather bag, a leather wallet.... beautiful. They sent up a glass of Champagne, they bought us breakfast one day, the list is endless.
And every time we saw the hosts, they knew my name. When we wanted directions, they would walk with us to a place where they could easily show us a route, not just point. They made reservations for us at places we could never have gotten into normally, private clubs and restaurants that were otherwise booked up. And when we left early, they gave us a bag of snacks, fruit and fresh juices to eat in the car in route to the airport.
On top of all that, the bar was fantastic, the views from the forty ninth floor amazing, the cocktails and food wonderful, and the service equally as friendly. Breakfast was also delightful.
So, I really cannot praise the Upper House highly enough, and I really don't usually throw this much praise around. I travel a lot, and this is now by far one of my favourite places in the world to stay. Forget faceless huge corporate hotels, the space, atmosphere and service here is outstanding. No, it isn't cheap, but treat yourself occasionally....life's too short for compromise sometimes!
