Good day out island really interesting as the last keeper clolony in Europe it closed in 1957. It's been restored well and would recommend Victoria hislops lovely book "the island to read before travelling. We sailed from plaka another lovely little place very friendly, and also visited the beach in elounda, would love to come back to this part of Crete again

We ignored all the 'packaged trips' and hired a car and drove to Plaka. From there boats were regular and fares could be paid close by. We sat and had a drink and a snack looking over at the island trying to imagine what it must have been like to wave goodbye to a loved one and knowing they were almost in 'touching distance'.. The island itself was pretty much as you imagine from the images created in your head reading the book. I found myself paying much more attention to the various notes pres... Read more

Visited in the morning, before the big boats arrive, interesting and atmospheric, took a boat from Elounda,10 euros return, also 8euros entrance to Spinalonga,.Only one toilet next to snack bar, toilet very poorly maintained, almost made me gag with the smell,.On return to Elounda had lunch in a very nice restaurant,Kalidon, which is on a pontoon on the sea,saw a turtle whilst eating a lovely Greek salad, polite and kind staff throughout,.

Make sure you have a guide on this trip. It's not cheap if you do the full day. Bbq was okay. Would not bother with it if I had known there was no English guide telling you the history of the island....

We took the boat from Plaka - only ?8 compared to the ?50 from the hotel! The little boats run every 15 mins from the harbour in Plaka, and take you around the island to the east before landing on the west side of the island. The walk around the island is steep in some places, so we left the buggy in the car. A fascinating history and buildings that are well preserved with lots of info boards dotted around to allow you to access the history of the village/ island. Some amazing views back t... Read more

We visited this place in a guided tour with a small party of 7 we took a ten minute boat trip to the island and had a leisurely stroll around the island taken back in time. Footings can be uneven so may be difficult to some with walking difficulties overall I would say 1-1.5 hours to see the place with breath taking views

A good trip out. Spent the morning in Agios Nickalous then drove up to Plaka for a 8 Euro boat trip to the island. The trip is advertised as 4 Euros, but that is one way so unless you are a good swimmer, I suggest it will be 8 Euros for most. A further 8 Euros are needed to enter the Fort/Museum when you get there. The island itself takes an hour plus to walk around, depending on your mountain goat abilities and your interest in history. My best suggestion is to take your own refreshments, eithe... Read more

We drove to Plaka which is opposite the island and took a boat over from there. 8 Euro each for the boat and 8 Euro to get on the island. Wonderful place and so sad. We preferred to go from Plaka as there is no set return time you can spend as long as you want. You must see this place to belive it. So real. So thought provoking. Difficult to imagine the anguish of those who actually lived through leprosy. It is kept very well with many places rebuilt to let you see how it was. Recommend you v... Read more

We picked up a 'Soinalonga boat' from nearby Elounda. you can park there for free. there are plenty and this particular company departs every half an hour. You can buy tickets by the beach or in a travel shop across the street up till 11 o'clock at night (for next day) it's a lovely twenty minute journey for ?10pp. Once there you have to buy a ticket to visit the area which is 8 euros pp

Beautiful place to visit. Lots of history with picturesque views. Unfortunately for me I don't think you get to spend enough time on the island, after the long day travelling from stalis we had about half hour guided tour then around 15 minutes to look around on your own before having to head back to the boat.
