"Melia Caribe Tropical was gorgeous. Very large, so enough to entertain yourself for six nights, with one day on an excursion. Everyone is very nice and friendly. There resort is more family oriented than couples. The beach was the best part. We were there every morning, on the Royal Service side. We decided to upgrade and think it was pretty worth it. Although the wine is terrible, that is included in the all-inclusive. Would not recommed for LBGT couples as there were none while we were there, but was still relaxing and gorgeous."

"My husband and I went to the Melia Caribe Tropical for our honeymoon the first week in April 2013. Our experience was amazing!! The beach was clean and breathtaking, and the resort was so gorgeous and peaceful. We upgraded to the Royal Service, and let me tell you... Well worth it!! Our personal concierge, Leo, was the greatest man ever! We tried to get him to come home with us, because he really felt like a friend by the end of the week. Everyone from him, to the housekeeping, to the bartenders, to even the other workers who didn't know us... They were all so friendly and helpful!! The food was great everywhere, but I think we preferred the international Buffett the best. The service in the restaurants that require reservations had servers that were a little slower.. But the food made it worth it. We were in building 36.. Closest to the beach but farthest from the restaurants. I can say if you are beach people.. Its worth it. They have a train to take you around, and the workers are always willing to pick you up! We will definitely be back!!!"

"It's a wondrfull resort! i went there for honeymoon. We had a lot of fun! We never were bored there. The resort is huge, but it worth it. My husband and me were enjouyng walking, taking a golf cart in porder to travel from room to the beach and many different restaurants. The hotel is worth every dollar. I would definately return there again.
there is a mall with a night club 'Jewels' in front of the hotel. It's beautiful..
We have a very wonderful time.
Thank you, Melia."

"Good stuff:
Beaches, pools and scenary in general was good
the kids club is great and very friendly
Not so good:
Food quality is OK, not great; but still pretty decent. I would have liked less on quantity and more on quality though.
Drinks included are pretty bad, which was not much of a problem for us because my wife is pregnant and i dont drink much, but they wanted to charge us for a non alcoholic beer for my wife, because it was not part of the all-inclusive package. Rum was crappy and all the decent drinks were paid for, which is not the idea of an all-inclusive week.
Bottom line I would not return to this resort or any meliá for that matter"

"I went to Melia with my husband, it was our first time...this place is amazing...its absolutely beautiful, CLEAN, friendly and large.
Lots of activities, perfect for couples or families with kids.
The restaurants were high end, especially the THAI restaurant...it was by far the best thai food i have ever had.
I love eating out and this was quality food and all inclusive.
The alcohol at the bar was little weak, but overall we had mix drinks and lots of wine all inclusive. The resort was sooooooo clean and people who work there had smiles on their face all day. If you needed help there was always someone there to help you or answer any questions.
YES they do try to sell you more packages ( VIP MEMBERSHIP )..do some research it's a great deal if you were to purchase with another couple and split the cost. Melia's are everywhere, and my personal experience it is absolutely worth coming back to this location or any other Melia location, and they have many including Europe. I would absolutely recommend this location and i cannot wait to go back! The furniture in this resort is beautiful and very high end. Plenty of lounges, lobby's and space to relax. The spa is great but pricy!
Breakfast has a lot of variety...they can make you any kind of omelets you like and there is plenty of food at all times!
WE LOVED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Although my family and I spent only four days at the Melia Caribe Tropical from 12/9-12, I want to acknowledge a couple of individuals, in particular one who ensured that our stay and especially for my elderly parents was stress free and pleasant. Guest Service Supervisor. Thank you for always being in touch with us and ensuring that we were comfortable and enjoying our stay. You definitely helped ease any concern that may have come up during our stay and especially with my parents. Also, thank you so much for the gift baskets you delivered to our rooms, which was so unexpected and appreciated. There is also another person we'd like to acknowledge who was the bellhop who attended to us upon our arrival. He went out of his way to show us a couple of rooms, one near the main area and another closer to pools and beaches, as we weren't sure which one to select based on my parents limited ability to walk. He was very patient and cared only that we were happy with our selection. As he told us, "I will not leave you until you are happy with where you want to stay.... Thank you, for giving us such a great first impression of the kind of service we were to expect during our stay. I also want to mention that we didn't upgrade to the Royal Service, so the excellent services we received from a few others had nothing to do with having to pay any extra. We were also not hassled about attending any timeshare presentation or trying to convince us to upgrade to any other category.
As stated by a lot of the reviews here, the grounds were spectacular, with fantastic landscaping, and beautiful peacocks and flamingos adorning the grounds. Their colorful train shuttles were great and they have about three or four of them taking you to various locations on the vast grounds. If I were to point out certain areas where a little constructive criticism may help enhance this wonderful resort, it would be in the food and drinks department. As stated on some reviews, the buffets were not the greatest, although you still can find something to eat. Thank you who helped us book the a la carte restaurants for dinner, we tried the Italian, Thai and French. The Italian wasn't what we expected, so it wasn't our favorite. However, the service was great, and we made the best of it. The Thai and French were pretty good. Actually,he recommended the French and he was right/better than I expected/salads were excellent. The only thing that I would mention that took a bit away from both of these restaurants was that the service was slow, which would've been tolerable, if it wasn't that by the time we did get our main course, the food was already a bit cold. An indication that the servers didn't deliver the food as soon as the chefs placed the plates out for delivery. However, this was already pointed out so that he can pass this on to the corresponding departments so they may improve upon it. I am sure once they improve in these areas, the Melia Caribe Tropical will definitely raise their overall great rating above 4 stars.
Will we return? God willing...thanks to the positive experience and the care and warmth of the aforementioned employees who help make our stay a very special and memorable one for me and my family.

"Good stuff
Beautiful resort, grounds and beach.
Staff very friendly and kids club great.
Not so good stuff
The resort is huge and you need to give yourself lots of time to get anywhere via the train. We did not upgrade to Royal Service probably should have for a better experience. TERRIBLE food and drink - got food poisoning twice. Our one good meal was the upgrade to the lobster and steak dinner which was $40 each. Drinks are made for the masses and pretty awful. You could pay for premium liquor and wine, which I would highly recommend. Sadly, I would not return."

"Skip the 'VIP package'. Oversold. You get a nice pool, slightly better food, but not worth the price. They claim that you get premium drinks, but they are limited in location and time of day.
Beautiful facility. Average food overall. The staff are very nice and are the best part of the place. They are pleased to help out. Staff at watersports center are less the case, and encourage you to 'work' with them directly (i.e. tips) rather than use the booking office. Bit of a turn-off.

"We had 8 families take this trip and all had a wonderful vacation at the resort, despite mixed reviews on some details:
The good: Resort's variety and size, beach, pools, staff friendliness... Royal service was worth the investment, premium brand drinks, much better food and overall pampering was great. All rooms were spacious and clean. Day-time activities were engaging and well executed.
The bad: The ocean was full of seaweed, not clear at all. Food was plentiful, but plain and generally poor. Too much walking is required - big resort with infrequent trains. When many people are together, this is an issue. For compact groups - not a problem. evening entertainment was subpar.
The ugly: mosquitoes"

"We liked Melia Caribe very much. As suggested, we upgraded to royal service. I don't think it was up to royal standards, but definitely better than the regular package. Gabi restaurant was great, kids loved eating there with no crowds, very friendly staff and tasty food. Had no problem with making reservations for dinners. Couple of times we were able to get a table with no reservation at all (no tipping, just friendly hostesses). But it was closer to 9 PM.
VIP lounge had much better choice and quality of alcohol drinks, other bars were nice, as well.
Loved the beach, but was a little annoyed by small businesses constantly offering water activities. Yet when we finally agreed to go snorkeling, they were not interested with just the four of us. Why offer then?
Club Melia concierge was a little pushy and after we declined to go through the 90 minute presentation, was clearly offended.
Overall, it was a great vacation and we will definitely consider Melia in the future.

"The resort and beach was beautiful. Rooms nice and roomy. Staff very friendly. Food was overall very good. The resort was very big and hard to get around (restaurants/lobby and some rooms on one end & beach/pools and more rooms on other end with a swamp in between). You could tell when new guests arrived, because they were confused & it took about a day to get the lay of the land. We were traveling with an elderly father and meeting our kids/grandkids. We were on one end and they on the other, so there was a lot of traveling back & forth on the train. Not very conducive to elderly. The restaurant staff was very frlendly; however, they were very slow in seating guests at the restaurants and not very easy to make reservations for dinners.
The all inclusive package was a good value, but they had a lot of charges when you arrived for extras (i.e., $2/day for using room safe, $9/day for internet, extra if you wanted shuttle service, $5 reservation fee for dinner if not made 24hrs before, etc). We avoided the timeshare presentation!"

"Had a great honeymoon at the Melia resort. The staff was nothing short of amazing. They were very friendly, fun to talk to, and quick to provide us with anything we needed. The room was exactly as described on the website, and the grounds were immaculate. The beach was great, and the Royal Service package was well worth the upgrade. The food at all of the restaurants we tried was top notch, and we never left a meal hungry. Reservations were never an issue, we called each morning to get a table. Drinks were fine, I didn't think they were watered down at all.
The only downside was having to explain to the Club Melia people that it's absurd that they ask to sit through a 90 min presentation. We did not do it, probably offended the sales person, but what can you do? That was the only downer for us while we were there.
I'd go back to this resort in a heartbeat, and would consider going to their other locations based on my experience here."

"Beautiful place, beaitiful beach. We went (2 couples) first week in Oct 2012. I never go barefoot in hotels BUT here everything was spotless, the floors in room, hallway, outdoors. Not too many people this time of year which was extra nice. We did the upgrade which was worth it. We all thought the food was great (can't understand other reviews complaining about it) and never had a problem making reservations at restaurants. Staff were always happy and super courteous to help & serve you, but that has been our experience in all the hotels we have been to. Liquor was top shelve and not weak. At first we found the resort extremely large & confusing, but after awhile we got the hang of it. We walked most of the time to get rid of the full feeling from eating and drinking so much :) My only complaint was the lame nightly entertainment & the disco. We have been to many other resorts that were far inferior & cheaper yet the nightly entertainment was far superior. No movies on the beach, karaoke etc so we went back to our rooms much to early because there was nothing to do. Oh and there was a singer in lobby by VIP office that was HORRIBLE. She was there every night "

"We went to Melia Caribe Tropical in August. It was a nice resort. Luckily our room was upgraded to a honeymoon suite when we checked in and we were located in a room that was right outside of the main pool.
The bad parts of the resort was having to take a train ride or flag down a golf cart to go to nightly dinners. We were thankful however that we did not have to take a cart to the pool or beach as we were in a room located right next to them. In hindsight we probably should have booked at an adults only resort, as both couples we traveled with had no children. We sometimes kind of missed having some peace and quiet at the beach, restaurant and pools. Lastly, it was tough to get dinner reservations. We finally got smart though and paid $5 to make dinner reservations in advance at the kiosks at the VIP area. This was a must as otherwise we would have had the buffet restaurant every day!
One of our favorite parts of the day was eating breakfast at the restaurant located right on the beach. Our server daily was AMAZING!! He served daily with much enthusiasm, and greeted us daily when we walked in to the restaurant. He was very attentive, and kept our coffee cups full. THANKS :-)"

"I guess other people had a much different experience than my friend and I; we absolutely loved it and would return in a heartbeat. The room was clean (I never saw roaches that others say they did); the staff was very attentive; which restaurants were not inclusive was clearly explained; everything was fabulous. I cannot say enough great things about the resort. The butler, was fantastic and went above and beyond helping us. The Dominican restaurant was delicious. We did tip and were happy to do so since everyone was so wonderful. It was a very relaxing, fantastic few days and I wish we had booked a longer stay."

"Great resort, kid friendly and clean, which is what impressed me the most. Food was good, but not 4 star, but that was ok for the price, and not what we were expecting anyway. Loved the size of the resort as walking was good to burn off those extra calories. 3 kids, ages 14, 12, and 9 had a blast and everyone was so helpful and friendly. Would recommend not staying in older rooms if possible as the bathrooms need updating - not horrible by any means, just an observation. Was everything we wanted to relax and enjoy ourselves. Beach and water nice too. Was impressed with how clean they kept pool and beach restaurant bathrooms - appreciated that!"

"We had a outstanding stay at the Melia Tropical. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. On arrival, we were able to switch to adjoining rooms that were closer to the beach. The rooms were spacious and very clean. Any problems with the rooms ( missing door latch pin, leaky ceiling , balky room safe) were handled with amazing speed.
The resort was huge! The grounds were expertly groomed and maintained. The transportation system was very handy. Multiple trains run the grounds constantly. One thing that is not pointed out is that the resort is geared for families on the Tropical side, and couples and all others on the Caribe side. The Tropical area is quiet and laid back while the Caribe area is much more alive and active.
The food was diverse and delicious. The buffets were close to the beach and convenient Make sure to make reservations for the a la cart restaurants early in the morning.
Take enough ones and fives ( no need for exchanging money) for tipping the staff. Tips are not expected or demanded , but goes a long way towards personal service. The staff work day long shifts and not once did we encounter an unpleasant employee. We had several bartenders, servers, and maids that made our stay so much more enjoyable.
The beach was clean and safe. Security guards roam the entire resort. Bavaro beach is known for its calm surf. There is a reef offshore that creates a break wall. No huge crashing waves.
All in all, a most relaxing and recommended vacation resort.

"I & 4 friends stayed at Melia for the 2nd week in July 2012. It was amazing! Every staff member was helpful & kind. Really & truly, everyone went out of their way to guarantee a great stay. We tipped very well & as often as possible.
My room was located near the Turey restaurant, train stop, pool, & beach. I loved it! Yes, making reservations were nearly impossible, but thanks to the friends we made from the staff, we were able to get reservations every night even if we were originally told they were booked. :)
We went on 2 excursions: 1) Bavaro runners to the sugarcane plantation, cigar hut, horseback riding, Dominican restaurant in the hills, hot cocoa house, & boogie boarding on Macao Beach, 2) Subquatics to the middle of the ocean for snorkeling & swimming with the sharks/ sting rays.
We also did kayaking in the non-motorized water sports area, sipped out of fresh coconuts outside of Los Cocos restaurant, & exercised in the fitness center. The trolley that gets you around the facility was a bit slow at times, so a few times we either hailed down a golf cart or walked it, which wasn't so bad.
We went to the club Imagine two nights in a row. The music there is great & it's beautifully built in a cave. However, on the second night I was crapped on by a hanging bat TWICE. Also, it is not important to wear heels ladies due to the uneven floor of the cave. Most importantly, make sure you purchase the $40 voucher for roundtrip taxi, door cover charge, & 2 drinks because the club doesn't let you in without it. The first night we just got a cab for $15 & decided to pay at the door since we figured we could just drink at the hotel and didn't need drinks, but we were halted & denied access. After much pleading & explaining & plain old refusing to turn around & go home, the voucher guy let us give him $20 each let us in! lol We bought the voucher the 2nd night, though! lol
All in all, we had a blast. The staff was incredible & I already miss all of their smiling faces. The food was so-so at best. The alcoholic drinks were good once you got to know the bartender & what alcohol offers the most kick (Ron Hispaniola 151, Ron Dorado, Brugal in the black bottle, & drinks like the Santo Libre (sprite/rum), mama juana, & even the cocoloco w/tons of added rum extra viejo).
Have fun folks! "

"Ok so pros and cons. MoStly cons.if your going as a couple,do not go here there is a lot of kids. Very nice lush resort with a lot of pretty birds but little stuff like the doors of are room not having seal on them so warm air flowing into the room and bugs being able to get into the room. The food here is by far wthe worst thing here. My girlfriend had stomach aches every night and made me no choice but to leave the resort and find and place for food that tasted some what good.My watch I left on the night stand was STOLEN from are maid while we were out on the beach when they came to clean are room. I reported it and melia did to do anything to help me!! The beach is nice but mother nature did that not the resort.also the people who work at the melia are super slow and have to be asked a lot twice if you need help with something, knowing Spanish will be very helpfull if you go.the drinks are watered down big time and they use the cheapo liqueur . Overall cheap o resort, bad food, theifs, bad booze, not happy with resort! Ripped off! I have a lot more stuff to complain about but I'm to lazy to type it all out. "

"This was an excellent resort and vacation! We did get the upgrade to the Royal Services, which definitely was worth it alone for the private pool and restaurant, but with the other extra's made it a great deal. The resort is big so being able to get a cart to take you anywhere was also nice. The beaches and water were amazing and we did a great snorkeling excursion that went to a great reef and also to an inclosure where you swam with nurse sharks and stingrays, it was really cool and our 8 yr old had a blast. Rooms were very nice and spacious. Only bad part is they only allow you to book dinners one day in advance so you have to call the morning before, but that wasn't a huge deal. Our family would definitely return."

"This was such a gorgeous resort & city! I would highly recommend it! This was my second time stay at a Melia resort and I would do it a third, forth, & fifth time!! The only thing that some people might not like, is that most of the employees speach broken English or Spanish. But I did not mind one bit! Great place, great food, beach, pool & people!!!"

"The facility was nice and the kids enjoyed the obstacle course however I tried obtaining reservations for dinner each day and was continuously told that the restaurants were full. When walking by each restaurant each evening they were not; the hotel appeared to be understaffed. In addition, all of my family members were sick during the week from something that we ate. I was very disappointed with the facility, the lack of service and the food. Overall, we would not return to this hotel."

"Was stuck eating at the buffet all 7 days, tried to make reservations and it was always full or could not get reservations for all family members until 9:45 pm. Kids were bored, entertainment was boring. No pool or beachside service. Drinks watered down. Rooms clean but smelled like moisture and ac not working well. Asked for lightbulb to be changed 3 nights in a row. Resort way too big and need to rely on train to get you from buffet/lobbies to room or pool. lobbies too dark and hot. They should install some fans. I have been to much better relsorts in Punta Cana, very dissapointed with our stay."

"Very boring compared to other resorts in punta cana, have to catch a train to go anywhere and it takes too long to get one and when it finally arrives they are usually all full. There is no poolside service or beach service. Animation is lame. Hotel is too hot, no fans in lobbys, rooms smell like wet ans humid."

After being in soo many other resorts before I am always expecting more from every different one I choose every time. Melia is not my favorite, don't take me wrong is good but no what I was expecting. I have better experience at other resorts in Punta Cana. Need to improve more activities, entertainment."

"This trip was nothing short of amazing. It was our first trip to Punta Cana and we picked the right place! The entire hotel is breath taking. It is enormous but there is a little trolley that goes by literally every 3 minutes and takes you to wherever you need to go to. Our room was great and close to the pool and bar. Everyone in the entire hotel is extremely friendly and willing to assist in any way they can. Even the gardeners greet you. We had our own personal assistant I guess you could say who would take care of our reservations and make sure our stay was as pleasant as possible. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to go to Punta Cana and I definitely plan on returning to this hotel. Although its not for my boyfriend and I at the moment where we are in our lives now it is definitely something we want to look into the future and plan on purchasing. I cant say enough about this place but we loved it and enjoyed our stay!!"

"I absolutely loved the hotel. They upgraded us when we got there probably because the hotel was booked. It was an amazing room! We got so much help from all the staff members in regarding to using the phone, translating and cleaning our sorority pad every morning and making sure our fridge was stocked with Presidente's! I love how th eresort justlooks so beautoful at every turn. We had very sweet drivers who would pick us up to take us to our rooms @ 5am. We didnt find it hard to make dinner reservations also and the food was for the most part good with a LARGE variety. The drinks were EXCELLENT! It was not watered down at all! We prob was drinking at every point of our trip. I loved the location as well. It was a very quite resort with a peaceful tone. I felt VERY SAFE and every one made us feel very loved and welcomed. (prob bc e were a group of hot girls lol) I do not usually visit the same area so soon BUT I cannot wait to go back!"

"The best family vacation we have ever taken. The Royal Service option was world class. The food at the Gabi restaurant was some of the best we have ever had. ALL the staff right down to the grounds keepers were extremely nice. The staff went out of their way to make our stay as great as possible. My advice(for what it is worth) is limit excursions because the resort is that great, you will wish you spent more time there. Our excursions were great also but they cut into our relaxing time. We will FOR SURE be back!!!!"

"We spent 9 days here and it was one of our best vacations ever. The staff was great, everyone was so helpful and polite. The grounds were beautiful and the food was great. Of course there were some dishes I didn't care for but you have 14 restaurants to chose from. Something for everybody. The two restaurants that were extra fees, was so worth it. They had the Habatchi Japanese Restaurant ( $25) so much fun and the food was GREAT. Then there was the steak and lobster dinner( $39). AMAZING So worth it.The enterainment was good, a show every night. If you didn't care for the show you could go to another lounge area for different entertainment, such as Salsa, Disco, etc. If you were feeling lucky you could to the Casino, they had a Live Band there as well. I highly recommend this resort. We will be back there in August for my husband's birthday, there was alot we didn't cover while we were there. You need at least 2 weeks to cover this whole resort."

"A total of six of us travelled to Punta Cana for nine days over the March break and had an absolutely fantastic time! Upon our arrival, we had Begonia and Patricia meet us at the front desk and they explained the resort and its amenities in detail and also assisted us in upgrading our accommodations. What amazing hospitality. We met up with one of the restaurant managers and he graciously assisted us in booking our a la carte reservations for the duration of our stay. He was absolutely courteous and went far beyond all of our expectations. The food at the resort was delicious and the restaurants had a variety of dishes to choose from. The pool was always clean and refreshing. The beach immaculate. We would definitely recommend this resort to families of all ages and had an absolute blast. Great work everyone!"

"This was our first trip to Punta Cana and the first time we've stayed in a Melia resort. The resort is beautiful and the grounds are very well kept. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. We had no problems making dinner reservations nightly. Over all, the food was good and they offered great variety at the buffets. We were disappointed in the quality of desserts though. Almost all seemed to taste freezer burnt and of low quality. Although this is something we've found to be true in other countries also. We did enjoy the fresh fruits and juices! Make dinner reservations! The food was delicious! Thai was our favorite. The room was clean and worked nicely for our family. Expect a small tv and no bathtub. Also, after day 1 our shower head was removed and never replaced. Not sure why because it was working fine. We brought this to the attention of the staff but it was never replaced so we were forced to use the additional hand sprayer. Not a big deal, but kind of annoying. The beach is perfect for long walks and very beautiful. There is a constant breeze and a lot of seaweed. I think this is because of the waters being more on the rough side. The trains and wildlife were a hit for the kids! Our room was close to the beach, so we had to plan on a half hour to dinner reservations every night. We didn't mind since the ride was so fun! This is a large resort!"

Eat at the buffet for lunch and make sure to make your reservations for Dinner! We loved the Dominican restaurant and the Americana!! I would definitely recommend the hotell to all! "Language Barrier for sure. I think most play dumb to knowing English. They are not friendly unless you are tipping them. Most bartenders can remember your drink after a few, they were all idiots here and asked every time. The serve a shot call momawanna...I called it momma DONT wanna. It taste awful. Food at beach buffet was rarely warm and it was a pain that they closed down from 11am to 1230. We thought all rooms had room service, but only Royal Service includes that which we never were offered. Seems this is the only way to go at this resort. The food is so-so everywhere. Thai place was horrible and we found the Market Place Buffet to be the better out of the Buffet's. The pasta was the best thing served there. We also did Dolphin Explorer cruise and the guy we bought drinks from there at their little bar ripped us off at $50 for two drinks. We did not know the exchange rate. The Excursion itself was fun, but on the spendy side after you buy pics. The people there are all about making money off of Tourist and could care less about service. The beach in March was windy at all times and we did not enjoy the water because of this. It was also dirty. I could of went to Mexico for cheaper and had a better time. There was nothing special about Punta Cana and I can recommend far better choices in the Caribbean. If you think Punta Cana is wonderful, then chances are you haven't been to many other places."

"Had a bad start dealing with the front desk and guest services. Our room assignment was screwed up. My husband and I were put in building 8 our daughter in building 17. Once we turned down Royal Service upgrade they didn't seem to interested in fixing the problem in a timely way. Spent our first full day of vacation. Dealing with serval individuals trying to get the room situation fixed. Waited 3 hours for a new room key to be delivered. Also, property is very large and no one explained the way to get to our room or much less escort us there. We were told by guest services to get on a train and get off at the 3rd. stop. Had we not found the bell hop with our luggage we would not have found our room. The rest of the staff seemed friendly, the food for such a large inclusive resort was better than expected, and the property was lovely. Once we could get settled in the right rooms the vacation improved but still not in any rush to go back."

"My family stayed at the Melia Tropical last Thanksgiving. We were suppose to stay a week, but left after three days and moved instead to Dreams (best decision of the trip).
We arrived late in the afternoon and were given two rooms. Both of which were dark, dingy and musty smelling. After several hours of discussion with the resort staff and viewing other options we were finally allowed to move rooms. Needless to say it took so long we almost missed dinner at the buffet (too bad we didn't) - Day one wasted.
This is a very large resort and walking is difficult for the elderly or very young (both were part of our party). The beach due to the time of year was filled with seaweed - rotting seaweed that smelled terribly. I understand that it is difficult to keep the beach spotless at this time of the year, but Melia didn't even make and effort. Every other resort on either side of the Melia cleaned the beach throughout the day. Needless to say we spent little time on the sand or in the surf.
The food was poor at best - both my wife and I lost weight in the three days we were at the resort. A telling testament to an all-inclusive. The frozen drinks weren't frozen - the bartenders didn't care to use much ice. And the staff in general were not friendly, you could almost say rude to Americans. It was obvious the difference in attention paid to the other guests. There were several times when I was at the front desk waiting to talk to someone and was ignored while others who came after me were helped.
You might say that it was a one off situation or that I am a being unrealistic in our expectations, but during the three days we spent at the resort we spoke with numerous other American families who all shared our feelings and experience. Everyone agreed that they couldn't wait to leave. Unlike the rest, we didn't wait until our originally scheduled departure to do so.......

"Reservation for Specialty Restaurants was laborious and difficult to obtain.
Resort grounds are large and require significant effort walking between resort restaurants and your unit if you are unable to catch resort train.
Face wash clothes were not available in the rooms. Only received wash clothes once in 8 days.
Charges for wifi access seemed excessive.
The staff is friendly and helpful. The overall experience was good."

"This was our 3rd time there and our last. We have visited many places in Punta Cana, Hard Rock, Barcelo Bavaro, Bavaro Princess, and this hotel was the worst. The service and food has gone way down hill. The same food served every day with a very poor selection. Very disappointed for the money paid! Staff was friendly, but rooms were old and not updated. "Dear fellow travelers,
My future wife and I (to be engaged soon! shhh...) just got back from our 8 night stay at Melia. We LOVED the staff and had a great time. I am going to write this in 2 parts, for those of you who will skim responces a quick pro/con format and then a little more detail for those who are seriously considering this resort.
Pros-
~Huge hearts and genuine personalities from the staff (bar/housekeepeing/consierge/grounds crews ect.)
~Beautiful Resort and incredibly well maintained
~Great pools
~Incredibly soft sand
~Good Value (bookit.com... Thank You for your help)
~Amazing Halloween show thanks for making that happen... note that please
Cons-
~I chomped down on 5 chicken bone chards while eating 'boneless' chicken (although they probably will prove its not advertised as 'boneless') and my girl chewed 3
~Had to switch rooms A/C, Safe, Fridge, and Shower all malfunctioned (but Quico Polanco did right the wrong and I thank him)
~You will be offered a sales pitch by the staff, take the tour (Thanks, great job and thanks for your time), but skip the office. One of the staff made me want to leave right then and there, oh then they sent a really animated guy to compliment us and give us a 'survey' Cram it guys NO MEANS NO, its not a good deal anyway... but thats just my opinion, please feel free to give them a chance, they deserve it
~Royal Service is a class of it's own, literally... well not really, we were 'regular' guests and we earned 'Royal' status by treating our friends (staff) well.
~Huge class divide, spend tons of money and the management will treat you with respect and give you time (like casinos do in the states) but when you don't they will half smile and wave on past, not a problem until you have one... did you resolve that?
~Food is ok, but give them credit for making the bottom line work in the slow season (con b/c of the chicken bones, they know about it now and are working with the food staff to help with this by incresing his quality control so I don't have my girl hear me bite one at dinner and have her ask me if I broke a tooth, (embarrasing at dinner). Btw please let me know if my suggestions helped b/c I know they will.
~Trip advisor.com is how they reward the staff, thats fine but what if a guest just wants to thank a manager... pretty much this is where you will be directed (good business choice, but try to make it more personal)
~Our feet still hurt from walking so much (mind you this was our choice b/c we did not feel like waiting for the tram and we like to walk... this place is Very sread out and from beach to lobby and dinner is a 20 min walk, or you can call for a ride, but that was our choice so... just sayin)
~Nothing opened on time, you will find that dinner reservations at 6 mean they are still in the staff meeting and you should stop in for a drink and show up at 6:10... BUT, in all fairness this was in the off season and you may find that is the reason So thats just what happened to us, you might see a differance 'in-season'
~Excursions pretty much suck, 'Buggy tour', bring candy for the kids and dog food for the dogs... you'll see why... and be prepared to break down, the staff is friendly though and they are good at getting you running again (we rode an ATV number 13)... 'Party boat' waste of money, go ahead and ride 15 minutes on a bus to arrive a few hundred yards down the beach and ride a boat to park DIRECTLY in front of the hotel beach, I would not spend the money again but this is the tour they will offer you. They spend too much time talking about how they remove the stingers from the stingrays (Steve Irwin RIP) but these people need to just chill, don't waste my time in the water just explain it on the way... seriously it's a pretty pathetic time.
I would go back for a wedding or event, but I would like to visit another property of theirs, well done."

"We had a great vacation.. Pay the extra for the Royal service and it is like the icing on the cake....Our concierge took great care of us...The resort was beautiful, rooms nice( but sitting furniture uncomfortable), food and drinks first rate, but the beach was really dirty..I am not sure if it was just the time we were there, but it was covered in seawood etc...( which can be really smelly in the heat and sun).. All in all I would recommend this property..again, thanks for everything!!!!"

"We just got back from a 4 night trip with a group of 6 and we had a BLAST!! The staff was always so friendly and the food was really good. We ate at the buffet one night and then 3 restaurants the rest of the trip. We went to the American (that was our favorite), Seafood and the French restaurants. We were a little nervous based on some reviews that we had seen on other sites but we had absolutely no problems and enjoyed our trip very much!
The resort is very big and you can ride the little train around the property but we enjoyed walking and looking at the beautiful grounds! Everything is kept very neat. We only went to one night of the nightly entertainment but the one we went to was a circus theme and it was awesome!! The maintenance men even cut up coconuts for us as we were walking to the beach in the morning! We can't wait to go back!"

"This was my first trip to Melia Tropical in Punta Cana. I would say this visit exceeded my expectaion. I merely wanted to get away for some rest and relaxation. I got that and more. From the moment I arrived on the property, I was taken care of very well. I was always greeted witha smile and 'hola.' The grounds were well groomed. Groundskeepers were constantly busy with upkeep. I only ate at the buffet, but the food was great - much better than any buffet I've been to in the USA. I never felt pressured or ignored during my stay. I would recommend this site for the first time visitor to Dominican Republic."

"Beautiful and wonderful all-inclusive resort. The staff was attentive to our every need from the time we arrived. (We did spring for the Royal Service upgrade and felt it was well worth the extra).
Food was excellent. We enjoyed days at the beach and the pool - neither were ever too crowded.
We felt that the entertainment lacked a little which may have been because the resort was not at full capacity (our trip was in Sept 2011).
Would go back in a second!"

"I love the place overall. It isbeautiful and peaceful.. The grounds are well manicured and kept clean, The beach area is cleaned all day. However the rooms are not cleaned with the same care. When I arrived there was a plastic bag underneath one of the chairs. When I departed a week later, the same bag remained under the same chair. (I did not remove the bag hoping housekeeping would actually properly sweep the floors daily). On the last day of my stay, housekeeping did not service my room at all except to leave a notice under my door about counting towels. The food is plentiful and good. If you drink alcoholic beverages, they are plentiful as well. The place is massive and you must use the trains or golf carts to get around unless you just want to walk. (which we did a lot of) "

"We got married at the Melia Caribe Tropical in 2007 with a small group of guests in attendance. We had 4 kids in our travel group. The resort was amazing, the staff were super friendly and helpful. The restaurants were fantastic and even the buffet food was good. We are planning on returning next year for our 5 year anniversary and cannot wait!!"

"We travel somewhere at least twice a year. Out of all the places we stayed this was the best. Beautiful clean and peaceful. The food was good also. A bit overwhelming by the size but every area is picturesque. Loved my stay.

"this is the first time I ever felt like writing a review, but we had the time of our life. We went for a wedding and there was about 50 of us. I cant wait to go back. We went for a week and never was board and my husband and i are in our 60's. Next time we will bring our children and grandchildren. We felt very safe,so clean friendly just cant say enough. Food was great and the drinks were strong!!!!"
