"My first experience at the Riu Merengue called the RIU Mambo 2 years ago, was excellent although the food was mediocre. This year our room was in the middle of the village and unfortunately the room service was not as good. The supplies are not the best (shampoo in a little enveloppe, no conditionner, no lotion) Everyday we would either get a hand towel OR a facecloth, it would have been nice to get both without having to call front desk. We realized when we left the resort that we had bed bug bites and I also found out that the rash on my legs was also from the bed bugs. (I searched the internet).
Aside from the room, it's a beautiful resort with friendly staff. The entertainment staff is awesome and the evening entertainement is very good.
I'm not sure I would go back a third time because of the lodging."

"Just got back from a week at the Riu Merengue (Feb 16th to 24th 2013). I have been to 3 other all-inclusive resorts (1 in Playa del Carmen Mexico, 1 in Punta Cana, and the Sandals in St. Lucia). Aside from the Sandals resort (which can't really compare because it was all around nicer but also much more money) this was the nicest.
The resort was very clean - workers were constantly around cleaning and were all friendly and would say hello. It was me and my sister (two attractive twenty something white girls) and I did feel like a lot of the male workers were hitting on us which I did not like AT ALL. I am a married woman and being oogled in my bathing suit and being asked if they could come home with me made me uncomfortable.
There are 3 pool areas with lots of loungers and both sunny and shaded spots which was great though people do reserve them with towels really early (like 8 am and they are all gone). The beach was gorgeous! One of the nicer beaches I have seen and a beautiful walk up to the top of the cliff and down by Bachata. Lots of beach loungers and they have waiters going around taking drink orders which is nice. The beach is long too so there are plenty of different areas to sit. I found the entertainment at the pools to be very annoying. The 'animation' team would bug you to take their dance lessons or do water aerobics or just come up to say Hi and try to 'pep you up' but all I wanted to do was read and swim and relax not play loud games and listen to loud Latin music. One guy grabbed my sister and my leg and started shaking it while we were resting on the beach which I did not appreciate. Other people seemed to enjoy them though so maybe just not my preference. I am happy that we were not harassed at all with people selling tours, photos, massages, etc like other resorts (one of my only complaints about Sandals actually) and most everyone we did see took a simple "No... and left no problem. Common bathrooms were very clean too which was nice.
The food and drinks were pretty good all things considered though the 'a la carts' were a joke - hard to get reservations - you have to wake up early and half the time the guy isn't even there to make them. We went to the Italian a la carte and it was the same food as the buffet pretty much - not great and less selection so we stuck to the buffet after that. Nightly entertainment was pretty terrible but very typical of all-inclusive resorts. We weren't able to stay awake late enough to visit Pacha though I did hear other people saying they enjoyed it. Free wifi is 90 consecutive minutes a day which was frustrating especially because I was accessing it on my iphone and if my screen blacked out because I was chatting I would be cut off for the rest of the day.
The room was definitely outdated but we didn't spend much time in it. The toilet did not flush correctly so you had to try a couple times before it would work. The beds were comfortable and the whole room smelt musty. Our room did have a nice balcony which we loved and enjoyed every night. I also liked how we had alcohol and drinks in the room. No lotion provided in the bathroom which I have never seen before and wish I had known to bring some from home.
You are allowed to use facilities at the other Rius however you cannot eat dinner at them and while you can sit at their pool/beach you cannot exchange for fresh towels there (which we had a problem because we were given a Bachata towel card at a merengue towel hut and when we went to get new towels we were forced to walk all the way to the other pool because they were giving us a hard time). Also the airport is more like 45 minutes away, not 15 (with no pick-ups at other resorts). Carribean Street Promenade is a small alley between Merengue and Bachata that has a dozen stores selling touristy trinkets with pushy sales people.
Overall, I'd suggest they tell their animation team to relax and quiet down, their staff to mind their manners and be gentlemen, get new bedding, and make wifi free all day %u2013 all simple changes to make the experience that much better. Though with that said, I thought it was very nice considering the price and would suggest it.

"Overall it was a nice trip because of the great weather and it's wide span of beach because the resort has three hotels connected. The entertainment team is very enthusiastic and friendly, and organizes activities and games through the day. However they don't have a show every night and the schedule is not posted. The beach party was rained out, but the coconut party was great. The rooms are reasonable size with three single beds and kept clean, but the bedding smell moldy and there're always mosquitoes in the room. Every one got bitten a lot, both inside and outside! Should have brought more repellent since they don't provide any like other resorts. The mosquito I killed on the mirror was still there when we checked out three days later. We find two, three or four bath towels each day, so most days we need to call for more towels. Half the time front desk doesn't pick up so we need to personally go over there (and they'll tell you to call). Towels arrived between 30 minutes to a few hours, so we've learned to bring back a couple of clean beach towels every day just in case. There were no blankets on two of the beds, so we have to request them the next day after being cold all night. They only have one restaurant with two kinds of dinner other than the buffet, definitely not living up the 4.5 stars they claim to be. This is also the only resort I've been to that has no hot tub. One last caution: do not book trips with Sunwing! I waited for a whole hour early in the morning, and they still claim I missed the bus when they were no show (I did ask every drive/tour guide who showed up)!"

"I had a wonderful time in Riu Merengue, Puerto Plata. The resort was gorgeous. The employees were friendly and impressively fluent in so many languages. The food was delicious, too! I have a few suggestions for improvement, however. First of all, I am an avid windsurfer. Upon my arrival, I reserved a windsurf board and sail. When it came time to use it, however, the board had multiple holes in it and was missing the fin. It was impossible for me to use it and I lost my reservation. Also, my boyfriend and I used a paddle boat. We took it out and then had to wave for a motor raft to come and get us pretty far out. We were given a paddle boat without a fin and were unable to gear/maneuver it. It was very scary and upsetting because we then lost our spot on the reservation list.
Another thing I have to say I was disappointed with was that people reserved chaises on the beach and pool-side with their towels for hours making it impossible for others to use. This was something irritating from Day 1. I would STRONGLY urge the staff of the resort to strictly enforce the 'do not reserve chaises' policy. It was very annoying.
Lastly, reservations for the 2 steak houses needed to be made between 7 and 11am. One had to be waiting on line for said reservations BY 6:45am or they would not get a spot. By 7:10am, the reservations were completely full. A better system should be put in place."

"WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE HOTEL A COUPLE OF HOURS LATE, WE WALKED AROUND THE ROOM AND WHEN I LOOKED IN THE BATHROOM, IT WAS SUPER DIRTY. GARBAGE PALE WAS NOT CLEAN AND DID NOT CLEAN THE BATHROOM. THEY STILL HAD NOT EVEN PUT THE THIRD BED IN OUR ROOM YET.
THE CLEANING LADIES ARE VERY RUDE. ONE OF THEM TOLD MY TWELVE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO LEAVE THE BATHROOM WHEN SHE WAS ABOUT TO WASH HER HAIR AND WE ASKED ANOTHER TO CHANGE THE PILLOW CASES BECAUSE THEY SMELLED AND SHE GAVE AN ATTITUDE AND SAID THAT SHE HAD ALREADY CHANGED THEM ONCE.
THE STAFF FROM THE FOOD COURT AND OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES ARE VERY NICE AND ATTENTIVE. THEY WERE VERY HELPFUL AND SWEET UNLIKE THE MAN THAT WORKED IN THE RECEPTION DESK BECAUSE WHEN I DECIDED TO LEAVE FIVE DAYS EARLY AND ASKED HIM IF MY COUSIN COULD TAKE MY PLACE (HE SAID NO) ITS NOT LIKE HE WOULD BE WAISTING EXTRA MONEY !!!
THE WATER FROM THE BEACH WAS NOT AS CLEAN !! A LOT OF SEA WEED
THE FOOD WAS ALRIGHT AND THE SOUVENIRS THAT THEY HAD NEXT TO THE BEACH WERE VERY NICE AND CHEAP ! OVERALL THE HOTEL NEEDS A NEW CLEANING STAFF AND THE RECEPTION SHOULD BETTER THEIR RULES
OH AND NOT ONLY WAS THE WIFI ONLY IN THE LOBBY BUT IT WAS ONE BAR ... EVERYONE SHOULD JUST WALK TO BACHATA BECAUSE THEY HAVE FULL BAR OF WIFI
I WOULD NOT RETURN TO THIS RESORT !!! AS FOR THE STAFF , KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK"

"I typically like the Riu resorts but this Riu is lacking quite a bit in comparison. The hotel was clean and the staff was mostly friendly but not very happy to please you and stay happy. The entertainment needs a serious upgrade in costumes and acts. The night life here is just not much fun. Except for breakfast the food was terrible. We had the same food choices for lunch and dinner and it was the same choices provided every single day. Good food is a morale booster so therefore our morale was low. We never got any of our wake up calls when requested and had to continue to reset the clock in the room as the maids turn off all the power to the room each day after they clean. The air conditioning did not work and after asking for it to be fixed 3 times we just gave up..vacation shouldn't be a hassle. The beds were too hard for me personally and it was 2 beds pushed together so it was difficult to lay together to sleep. If you don't like to haggle to buy souvenirs then don't shop the stores other than the resort gift shop. You will be taken advantage of in price and if you don't use pesos in the resort gift shop they will over charge you. The pool closes at 6pm which is a total bummer, night swimming should be allowed. The Italian restaurant and steakhouse are not worth the reservation. You still have to serve yourself part of your dinner and it's still the same food located in the buffet. The best part of the trip was our visit to Ocean World. Wow! I definitely recommend a dolphin swim there and to have a fantastic dinner and show. The Bravissimo was a lot of fun!"

"The accommodations were good. Much improvement is needed in the entertainment area. I believe the entertainment director and crew need to update and their acts. The nightly shows were extremely lacking and quite dissapointing. The food was acceptable, but the alcohol was subpar. While I understand alcohol is included in the price, the quality should not suffer. The beach was great and well maintained. Staff in general were attentive and friendly. I must admit, that I would not return to this specific resort."

"My family came to visit me in the Dominican Republic where I live. The resort was very clean, the staff friend and efficient. The food very plentiful with a wide variety to choose from and very good. The entertainment was exceptional. The entertainment staff did an excellent job of getting everyone involved in the activities and just having lots of FUN! I will definitely book another trip to this resort and highly recommend it to everyone, because there was something to do for all ages... including just doing nothing at all but relaxing."

"Just returned from a 9 day stay at this resort. What a delightful vacation it was. Everything about the resort was top notch and fun. I thought the food was great. There was plenty of variety. Each night there were some specials -- ham, turkey, salmon, prime rib, leg of lamb, to name a few. There was a Mexican night where you could build your own tostada or burrito with beef or chicken. There was Paella, pasta, a huge salad bar. Breakfasts were good too, eggs to order if you wanted, lots of fruit smoothies that were great, a good selection of breads. Enough of the food -- drinks were super and you could ask for premium liquor in your mixed drinks if you wanted. I would have liked to have had a selection of wine, even if it was for an extra charge because I thought the wines were awful. There was plenty to do if you wanted to. I played darts every morniing with a truly international group. We had so much fun laughing and applauding each other's mishaps. The entertainment staff was so much fun. The pool was great and if you wanted variety, you could go to either of the two other properties. Our room was very comfortable and very clean. Everyone at the resort was friendly and very professional. A testament to the resort is the number of people we met who have been coming for years. We even met a couple from FInland who have been coming here for 14 years. One last thing, tipping can get you a lot of good will. We brought a lot of one dollar bills and it felt good to be able to thank those who were especially good to us during our stay."

"As an overall experience we had a wonderful time! The weather was great- the facilities and grounds were beautiful. the staff was very friendly, helpful and very attentive. We were impressed with the knowledge of languages. With this being said, we need to be very honest and advise the food was a dismal 2 and the entertainment was as well a 2 at best.
The food was very bland and unsatisfying. A lack of sauces and gravies for meats, and lack of salad dressings made for boring eating. It didn't matter if you ate at the buffet or at one of the restaurants. I would think the staff would realize they had a food issue when all of the plates still have most of the food left on them. I also would think they would have choices for the masses not the few- I don't consider prune ice cream a flavor anyone would want...
Perhaps they should bring in a consulting firm - a fresh set of eyes would certainly see the food issues as they are very visible.
Having to make a reservation for the specialty restaurants only between 7am- 9 am for the same evening seems to not be needed as those restaurants are not more than half full at any sitting on any day we passed by.
I was also very disappointed with the entertainment - Although the entertainment staff has a lot of energy there is very little to do in the evenings. They spend lots of time with useless and unimpressive staff dancing and the shows they put on at night are all lip sinked. When dancing with the children the staff person should be in front of the kids so they can follow along.
I also think they should have other options at night other than watching a very unimpressive show- Perhaps game night? i.e. Bingo? board games? Vegas night? Show a movie? We were there during the super bowl and it would have been great if they showed the game on the big screen.
The PAS (public address system) is not very good and you cannot understand what they are saying on the microphone. this is very annoying as it is already hard to understand the MC with his accent. Also screaming into microphone doesn't help.
they should also have better signs up for entertainment and show information at the other hotels.
I would have liked more options for evening entertainment.
Overall we had a great time, we did go for the weather, and beach time- and it was awesome!

"We have just returned from ten nights at the RIU Merangue, got back 21 Feb. The hotel looks dated and in need of a refurb, we had room 1021 which had a nice sea view, which we had to pay extra for, BUT, it smelt awful, clearly a smokers room, it also smelt and felt damp, after a few days our clothes felt damp as did the beds. PLUS we could not use the terrace as we were so close to one of the restaurants we got all the smell from the extractor which started about 7.30 in the morning and went on well into the night, we didn't sit on the terrace once, nor could we leave the sliding door open to ventilate the room. Our bathroom window had several massive cracks which oozed brown sludge which I presume is where the shower continually sprays when in use.
Food was average, a distinct lack of decent meat, nice salads, hot food was always luke warm, nice breads, great fruit smoothies at breakfast, nice soups but they need to something about the desserts, you can only eat so much creme caramel and jelly! They need a good pastry chef.
Hotel and grounds spotlessly clean, people cleaning all day and night, all staff absolutely fantastic, so hard working. The animation team worked all hours and were not pushy if you didnt to want to join in with the activities. Evening entertainment was pretty awful, like a bad school production, constantly punctuated by the animation team doing what looked like a war dance, it got a bit boring after a couple of days. Too much miming to music, often very badly.
We wouldn't go back as the hotel lacks a bit of wow factor, but is ok if you just want a few days in the sun"

"The resort was very nice. It was far from the town so don't expect to just leave the resort and walk around the local area - you'd need a taxi. That being said, the resorts have more than enough to do to keep you busy. Staying at the Riu Merengue also gives you access to the Riu Mambo and Riu Bachata. They all have different feels to it so it's nice to float from resort to resort, both for entertainment and for food/drinks. I did the all inclusive package so it was great being able to eat from 7am to around 2am, though the late night food consisted mainly of burgers, hotdogs and other typical american fare. Kind of disappointing for being in the DR. The breakfast, lunch and dinner foods were very good.
The staff everywhere in the whole resort were very kind and helpful, except for the internet ladies. I wanted to just send an email to family but the internet was terrible and the computer had to restart 4 times. You pay per 15 min but they wouldn't credit me since I only had about 5 min on the internet, the other 10 was restarting. Then they gave me wrong change. They seemed more interested in chatting with each other than helping their only customer.
The pools were very clean, though pretty packed with people. The bars located throughout were quick with service and they were all very very friendly. A lot of the drinks were very sugary, but there were some gems in there. Try them all.
Overall, I was very satisfied. I couldn't stay there for more than a week, but under a week was perfect. There were several side excursions that people offered and they didn't seem to be too bad of a deal. If you want to do wind surfing, I strongly advise asking early and frequently because being able to do it depends on the weather. I'm the type of person that wouldn't visit the same place twice, but there were many people there that were regular tourists so the place is doing something right."
