The family and I went here for about a week in May 2016. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is amazing, and the food is fantastic! The rooms are clean and comfortable. The beds and pillows are great. The staff is friendly. Rosalinda at the front desk is VERY helpful. She was able to help us with any issue or question we had. We had an issue with our rooms when checking in. We were supposed to have a specific room reserved for us as returning guests, yet the room was given away by anoth... Read more

There is a reason for the low rates for this resort. The grounds staff go out very early in the morning to clean up the beach from all of the garbage & sewage that washes up on the beach from the nearby Rio San Juan river. There are several nice pools which are nice but the beach is not enjoyed by the guests much. The wifi works but often goes down and is slow. The all inclusive buffet and drinks are par for the country. The hotel staff tell you they understand when you speak to them in E... Read more

We stayed at the resort from MAY 2016. Resort was nice, staff were amazing. (too many managers to the ratio of staff) Pools were great, beach was picture perfect. Food was okay. This was the first time the resort was open in the slow season so there were only about 300 guests. Half of the buffet was closed so the food was reused into other dishes from one meal into another to create variety. ( I don't mind it as long as it's done carefully and i believe it was) Room was BASIC two double b... Read more

We stayed here for 11 nights. Hotel and grounds and staff were lovely. Food was good. But did not like this side of Dominican. Also Staff need to be trained on allergies as when I was asking if there was nuts in certain food they just didn't understand.

My wife and I just arrived back from the Bahia Principe San Juan May 14 -21 2016, room 2235. It was our 2nd time. The last time we visited the resort was about 8 years ago. Thank-you again for the bottle of Brugal Rum and T-shirt which was in our room. To start we want to highlight the following staff for their friendly behaviour and often going out of their way to do extra for us and making us feel special; Nelson (Front Desk) Alexis (Server for Buffet and Specialty Restaurants) Frank ... Spent a week with my daughter and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The weather was amazing, sun was hot, pool refreshing and the AC cold. The food was good and there were was a lot of variety. As others have noted there are sand fleas and other bugs but don't let this deter you, just be prepared as some seem to be bothered more than others. Plenty of activities and you do as little or as much as you want and we went to relax.

We stayed at this resort from apr. 3-11, after reading some reviews we did have some concerns. This is a great resort as long as you have reasonable expectations, if you can book for anywhere under 1200$ in Eastern Canada it is worth the trip. Rooms are dated but very clean, as is the resort as a whole. Beach was great, lots of chairs and not overcrowded due to it's size. Beach does not have white powdery sand but is still very nice, sand fleas were not a problem for us. The food was great, lot... Read more

Went from May 26 - June 2. My real rating is more of a 3.5 Let me get the bad out of the way first. We got assaulted by sand fleas. Like really really bad. My feet were completely covered in bites and my legs weren't much better. So because of that we spent most our days by the pool instead of the beach and even avoiding playing beach volleyball which I love. Another problem is that it seemed like very few staff spoke English. I don't expect them all to be perfectly fluent but when your waitre... Read more

Huge property, nice, clean, well taken care of...BUT too far away from excursions, food is ok not great but you get what you pay for being an all-inclusive resort. Beach was good, sand is not "white" but no biggie! Water clear AND VERY choppy for boats. Property has great little street with shops, bar, disco and casino...unfortunately majority are empty store fronts. Very nice people work there and they work very hard too...they love those tips. US dollar excepted too!! Had an Oceanview room and... Read more

We went here in January 2016. While the weather was so-so (it rained half the week - which is no fault of the resort), we had a longer time to actually do things at the resort (as opposed to staying at the beach away from everything). First off, the beaches were O.K. The sun faced away from the beach so to get a tan you have to position your chair away from the water. Which is good - because the water is murky. It's the type of murky that when you're there you tell yourself it's not that bad, a... Read more

Myself and a group of friends stayed at the resort for 2 weeks from end of May to start of June. We had an excellent time. The resort is in the north of the island and only an hour from Puerta Plata airport (much better transfer time than those going to Semana etc.) The main highlights were in no particular order: - the reception staff, especially Michel, who was incredibly friendly and helpful - Ignacio, Elizabeth, Cappucino and the entire animation team! Yes the Bahia Principe song is very... Read more

We visited this resort in January 2016 that we purchased through Westjet Vacations. We came with expectations of a 4* resort and upon exiting the bus, we were very disappointed. The customer service was poor, there were staff yelling at vacationers just to get their attention before they had even registered to get the key to room etc. We had requested a king room, ocean view in a quiet area. We were taken to the furthest away building that was not quiet and our room had 2 double beds and was ver... Read more

I just took my second trip to Bahai Principe Rio San Juan and it was even better than the first but 5* is all I'm allowed. Our stay was from May 28th to June 7 th. This time, we were in a suite (1223) on the second floor and it was lovely to have beach front views from our 2 balconies. The ceilings are vaulted, there are two full bathrooms, a living room and bedroom with a king sized bed. My first stay was in a ground floor basic room which also had an ocean view and was more than adequate. The... Read more

I have been there twice and enjoyed both times immensely. The food is good, the variety is nice. The beaches, while not pristine white, is clean. The rooms are clean and the cleaning service was fabulous. Customer service in general was wonderful. There is a lot to do in the resort, and many excursions are offered to please everyone. If you are inclined to like to wander towns close by, this may not be the resort for you, but if you enjoy a relaxing holiday away from it all, or don't min... Read more

We spent the week of June 6 here. The hotel is very remote, clean, but definitely needs a face lift. We had an oceanfront room, with a lovely quiet pool just steps away. The food in the buffet restaurant was quite acceptable, however wasn't too impressed with their specialty restaurants, certainly not on a par with other Grand Bahia's. The ocean was lovely, but lots of sand fleas on beach, we were aware of this so had lots of bug spray on hand. The hotel is usually closed at this time of year, b... Read more

So let me begin by saying, the reason I booked this trip was because I stayed in Bahia Principe in Mexico and hands down the best experience ever. I usually write good-hearted reviews and try to be as honest as possible without insulting anyone. This may be an exception. I stayed June 22-27, 2 Adults and 1 Child (11 years old) 1. Check-In/Check -out max 15 minutes 2. Food-Definitely not at par with the one in mexico...barely anything to choose from- some stuff looked under cooked and not appet... Read more

First of all, the good - rooms were clean, lobby check in staff was friendly and helpful. we spent most of our time at the far left end of the beach since it was quiet and had the beach almost to ourselves and the bar at that end also. The bartender, Yanira was very friendly and looked after us by making sure our drinks were refreshed. Food service staff were cheerful and made sure we had what we needed for the most part. Now for the bad and the ugly - the first day we arrived, we were approac... Read more

We stayed here over Christmas 2015. Waited to write anything because every time I thought about it I would get angry over the money that was wasted staying at this dump. We had stayed here several years ago. I liked the size of the resort, the friendliness of the staff and the food wasn't bad. It was very dated and the beds were terrible. We saw a deal for this place and did a little research. It supposedly had been completely renovated and this was confirmed by the hotel rep. Because my only is... Read more

We got a great deal on this resort in January 2016, and it was incredible. We aren't picky all-inclusive travelers who demand perfection, so our experience probably reflected that. We felt very spoiled. I have to say, I am totally shocked at some of the recent bad reviews - not sure what people are looking for, but this was truly paradise. But I'll address the insufferable North American visitors a little later in the review... The food was amazing - seriously great. Selection was outstanding... Read more

Very nice place, however it is too long of a crazy bus ride to get there, almost an hour. Our check in was 2 hours, taken to a room that was already occupied first, then sit in the sun on there little cartbus for about 30 minutes so the front desk woman could find us a room, talking with maids? The rooms are small but fine for sleeping. The AC quit working on the second night, that was a hot night as they didnt come to fix it til morning! Food was good, lots of fresh fruit. For complete transparency, I spent three months at this resort for work purposes. The staff, with the exception of the front desk were very friendly, helpful, and honest. The front desk staff were very unpredictable. Some knew what they were doing but most did not. The big problem I have with the resort is the beach. The beach is infested with sand fleas. Bahia Principe San Juan, Puerto Plata I passed the first two weeks of June at the Bahia Principe San Juan, Puerto Plata. Here are my observations: The Positive: The Resort ?? The resort is old, but is very well maintained. It is a very large resort. No other resort is found in the area. The whole beach is available for the tourists. Swimming Pools ?? We went to this hotel for 2 weeks in June. It was the worst experience and we will not be going back. The food in the food hall was always cold and it lacked variety. We stayed in a suite which had 2 bathrooms, only 1 of the showers worked. Also, not too far from the main restaurant or lobby, and it was quiet most nights. The food at the hotel is of a good standard, there is plenty to choose from.
