Canyon de La Vieja Lodge takes the possible industry environmental repercussions very seriously. The main reason to offer this information is to enable putting different processes, as well as mechanisms, products and behavior patterns into practice that will allow us to continue protecting the environment. Among the strategies they have adopted, you will find the following programs:
  • Separation of waste and recycling: The project includes the hotel and nearby school. Together with guests, they have begun to separate recyclable material from the waste and take it to a center where a group of women process and sell it.
  • Use of eco-friendly products: They have eliminated the use of chemicals in our laundry and some others areas that tend to use highly contaminating chemicals.
  • Sponsorship and assistance with the Curubande School to obtain the Blue Ecological Flag: This award is given to institutions that offer a place appropriate for education. It also takes into account not only the instruction of children in their regular assignments, but also teaching our children to take care of the environment and society.
  • Educational programs: Together with the University of Costa Rica and two other hotels, they have initiated an educational project in 5 different schools. These programs are based on the correct use and importance of our resources such as water, earth and natural energy, among others.
  • First Aid training: Currently, 14 people are trained in first aid care so they can respond to any emergency that a nearby person may be having.

We stayed here after a day long adventure tour and really enjoyed it. Our private cabin was very nice, the pool area is great to relax at for a bit, and the breakfast was pretty good. I have to say dinner at the restaurant wasn't amazing, but there are few options other than hotels in the park. Good, quiet and scenic spot if you're staying for an adventure tour.

We had quite a lovely two days at this location. It is outside of the park, not far from Liberia - set in the forest. It is not within the park, so the outdoor adventure experiences are not what they may be within the park, but they have a quite enjoyable zip line tour. Accommodations are in duplex cabins - spacious, tho sparsely finished rooms, completely adequate air conditioning, so we were comfortable in the heat of the season. Yes, there were bugs, but we were in a forest. . . This pla... Read more

Nicely laid out, fairly quiet resort close to Rincon de la Vieja national park. Helpful staff and good amenities. Pleasant bar area reasonably priced. Spacious clean cabanas either close to pool area or in more secluded areas.

I stayed here with 3 friends. The staff was very helpful, friendly, and spoke good English. The rooms were clean, had air conditioning, and hot showers! The breakfast included coffee, juice, fruit, eggs, beans and rice, toast, and plantains. The activities offered were a lot of fun. We did the day package and truly enjoyed it. Our guide was professional and funny. Great place to go as a couple or with kids.

Traveling from San José, Costa Rica to the Canyon Lodge took about 4 hours by car. The lodge is just 3 km East of the Inter Americana and about 18 km away from the Rincon de la Vieja Natinal Park. The facility offers individual cabins, nicely equipped (no TVs, but air conditioning). Wi-Fi available close to the Bar, Restaurant and Lobby. Breakfast bar incl. with the booking. Lunch and dinner buffets are available for a moderate price. The property offers a lot of acreage with plenty of outdoor ... Read more

We stayed for the first time. There was a lot to do here! The pool/bar area is very nice for friends and families. The little huts are clean and have good A/C. We did the Volcanic mud spa for just $15 and it was a new fun experience! The hanging bridge over the river is a thrill in itself. They also had rappelling, zip lining, horse back riding, etc. Great place for adventure!

Brought 15 students and faculty for a study abroad tour. This was one of the students' favorite places to stay. The lodges' rooms are spacious and clean. Hot water, nice pool (with a nice bar for the grown ups). The views were amazing. Didn't do the adventure activities but it was well-located on the property for those who might do them. We traveled into Guanacaste for different excursions and the location made transportation easy.

We did the all day tour to Canon De la Vieja and had a great time. Luis was our guide and I have to say he was Absolutely Amazing!!!! My mother was hurt in an ATV accident and he really went above and beyond for her to enjoy herself on this tour! Zip lining was fun, lunch was good, horses were so much fun.... This was the only tour that we were able to trot and gallop and it was a blast!! There were only about 5 of us that did the trotting and galloping the other 4 stayed behind at a slow pace... We visited Costa Rica this month and having been at a brilliant hotel previous to this we arrived here and its terrible! We arrived for lunch which is overpriced at 15 dollars. Alot of the options were limited and tasted poorly cooked. You can choose to pay at the end of your stay or per sitting we chose the latter. We had an all day excursion booked which we had to cut short half a day due to the hotel not providing a box lunch for us even though they were supposed to do so. When we brought thi... Read more

The main thing about this hotel (like most others in the Rincon area) is that all the activities are right here. Without leaving the property you can zip line, run the river, horse back ride, etc. Unlike some hotels, this one doesn't seem to accept the large tour buses of people coming in from Liberia for the day. Kind of nice! Cabins are duplex-type units with a room on each side. Room was nice, quite large, clean. Was super disappointed there was no mini-fridge in the room but coffee maker w... Read more

The location of the lodge/cabanas is fine, being close to the Rincon de la Vieja park, where we walked two beautiful trails. The lodge itself is nice, with a good pool and friendly staff. At the same time, it didn't feel as charming as some of the other places we stayed at in Costa Rica, probably due to the size of the lodge (we usually prefer smaller lodges/hotels). Many beautiful birds can be seen during sunset/sunrise. During daytime, it is noisy with many tourist who do activities at the sit... Read more

We stayed here for two nights. Unfortunately we stayed during low season and there were very few guests staying. Therefore the lodge lacked any personality. I can imagine with all the activities available at the lodge it can become chaotic in high season with day guests. Rooms are basic as are most in Costa Rica but clean and spacious. Each lodge has a veranda with patio furniture. Ideal for listening to the deafning dawn chorus, which was a hilight of our stay. There is a large heated pool whi... Read more

Stayed with our two grandchildren. Right on the Canyon with lots of things to do. The room are in separate cabins with good bathrooms. The breakfast is excellent and interesting with local foods. Very near the Park so you can get started when it opens.

First off, we did not stay at this hotel, but rather, were picked up at our spot in Tamarindo and taxi'd out here for a day adventure. Our taxi driver, Henry, was on time and super nice. We enjoyed chatting with him and also just relaxing on the hour and a half drive out to the location. When we arrived he helped direct and guide us to each adventurous destination and made everything very seemless and easy. We started out with zip lining and our guides were very knowledgable and fun! I was nervo... Read more

We booked this tour from Gecko Tours at Riu beach. We paid $130 a person for a private tour - two people. Our guide was Christian. The ziplining is fine, but the real action is the white water tubing through the rapids. The rappelling is one section of rock about 30 feet down and then you climb up to the same spot. You can kayak the water instead and that would be the better option because you would be able to control your movements. These are level 2 and sometimes 3 or 4 rapids. We wer... Read more
