"This is not your typical vacation. This is a vacation of adventure to one of the most beautiful places in the world and if you are going to write a reviews complaining about missing a towel or seeing some bugs this place is probably not for you. We traveled with persons in the 30's age group to give you some info. A lot of walking, hiking and some amazing excursions...you will see things that are rare or do not even exist in most parts of the world. I will admit the buffet was a little boring serving the same stuff over and over accept for the last day and the italian food...lets just say don't bother with that however the Mexican restaurant was great. I have read reviews about birds going into the buffet all over the place and other animals but they have a huge net protecting all around the buffet area and Yes, once in a while a bird could get in (usually the small shiny black birds that are harmless) but by no means did it bother my group. ALL the staff and i mean ALL were absolutely 100% amazing and wer so professional and helpful. Many people were able to speak english with ease. The black sand had me a little off at first but other than getting really hot with the sun it is very beautiful and to watch the sunset along with so many shooting start at night we fell in love. They have vans that take you around the resort as the pool/beach area and the actual rooms are a good distance apart with heavy hills but you get to see some cool creatures on your walk such as a racoon like animal (in the resort very friendly) iguanas, giant grasshoppers literally 9 inches long and some really cool birds and if you are up real early you will catch a view at some monkeys (like 6am ish). Definitely go to this place for the amazing views also. If you just want to go enjoy the beach and amazing pool area that would be good also if you have kids as a lot of the excursions are pretty intense and should be viewed with caution before spending yoru hard earned money. We got caught with the trap to go to coco beach at the other hotel (Grand Papagayo) for a 'free' boat ride and 'free' lunch and we asked if it was a timeshare pitch and they dennied it to death however....in simple terms, it was a sales pitch--that i did not like and i spent about 3/4 hours wasting my vacation time and the Grand isn't even as good as the Allegro...yes, the rooms are better but everything else is simply boring..the pool at the Allegro Papagayo was way better more activities, better music. Tip your bartender a dollar or two and you will get better drinkds if you have any complaints about the open bar drinks...listen, its a business and they need to make money as well so they can't offer grey goose vodka and high end liquor at an open bar so thats a whole different story. They have 2 pool tables and some other games like ping pong and a few other to keep you busy by the pool area and 2 'hot tubs' but they are the same temperature as the pool (very comfortable)-overall, i loved this place to death even though im scared of bugs and heights i overcame a lot of fears and learned so much about the country as the staff would always tell me a fact about the Guanacaste area and by the time i left I had learned so much about the country and i would like to thank all the staff of the Allegro for such a great time and for their great passion for their country --you will learn this saying when you get to the Allegro if you are not familiar with Costa Rica... ' PURA VIDA'"

"For liquor they served the cheapest local stuff imaginable? the cheapest most disgustine rum and vodka!!! The rooms were so/so,, but nothing worked in the bathrooms, and I mean NOTHING, soap dispensers broken, no hot water for a shower, sink plugged up! The maid didn't clean or empty the garbage, she just made the beds,,I won't be going back."

"The food options were fair. Not much variety to the selection or restaurant options. I would recommend snacks availalbe at the pool bar area.

The bar area off the lobby was closed the whole week we were there which was disappointing.

The staff was amazingly friendly and courteous.

There were' no smoking' signs posted, but patrons were smoking in and around the pool and bar areas."

"Reasons to stay at the Occidental Allegro Papagayo Resort in Costa Rica

1. You like 2 star hotels.
2. You like to eat low quality food.
3. You like to eat with birds flying around you and trying to eat off your plate.
4. You like off brand alcohol.
5. You like to swim in dirty pools.
6. You like to have bugs in your room.
7. You like to shower in cold water only.
8. You don't want the hotel to have any activities at the hotel.
9. You like dirty beaches.
10. You like to be lied to.
11. You want to pay high prices for taxies."

"One of the best vacations we have ever had in our 28 years of travel. The only down side that I seen was the resort was built in the side of a hill, but they had shuttles every 10 minutes, but the hill kept us from gaining a lot of weight because the food was great and we ate all of the time."

".my room didnt have any air conditioning and we were eventually switched the following day mind you after 3pm... the room was closer to the beach and the pool but again had no air condition... that toook another day to resolved. as you can see we had a horrible couple of days."

"My party of 12 came to Guanacaste on Dec. 16th 2011 for 7 Days.
The welcome in the Hotel Occidental Allegro Papagayo was OK.
We received rooms in the building 11 facing to the pool.
The food was OK.
Alcohol in the resort was not to our satisfaction.
We were not satisfied with the cleanest of the rooms. Bad service.
In the resort there is a lot of black flights, after bait our body react withe the allergy. The medico in the hotel want to sale to us three tabs for $125 USD. The same tabs we could buy finally for $10 USD.

Overall rating from 1-10 was 6.

"Costa Rica is a beautiful country and the people are so nice. The Allegro papagayo though, leaves a lot to be desired. The food and drink quality is poor, entertainment is nil, The resort is beautiful, grounds are well kept both the black beach and private white sand beach were amazing. It would have been a wonderful vacation had the resort put a little more quality into the food and beverages. The Disco brand alcohol makes the drinks taste terrible, food is very repetitive and bland. Hot tubs never worked through out our stay. We actually rented a vehicle and left for a few days and had an amazing hotel at the arenal volcano."
