We spent 3 weeks travelling from Caribbean coast then along the northern sector and all the way down to the south of the Pacific coast staying in all different grades of lodges and hotels and can honestly say this was 1 of the worst. The rooms are ok but lots of bugs, no hot water on our 2nd night, informed reception, they said they would send someone, 45 mins later I phoned again and they said the solar panel was changed that day and would have to wait until the following day for the water to h... This place in so many ways exceeded my expectations. The room was great. Had A/C, beds were nice, hot water in shower. There's a waterfall not far away that you can hike to and swim at-we did that the first day. The second day we went to the National Park and did the Las Pailas trial (1.5 hrs) and the La Cangreja Waterfall trial (4 hrs). Then, we went and swam at another waterfall that is just outside the entrance of the park. Then we took the shuttle from the park to the hot springs. The third... Read more

If it wasn't for the scenery, this hotel would be just "okay." The rooms were nothing to write home about. It was very difficult to get the shower temperature to adjust correctly, and the Internet was a bust (would boot you off every few minutes). But, hey, you are staying at the foot of a volcano -- what can you expect? Well, expect beautiful scenery, great hiking, and great outdoor fun. Just don't expect immaculate rooms.

Great place. We stayed 4 nights to explore the area. This location was perfect for us. There is an "Adventure Center" on the property (right across from the restaurant) that gets lots of tour buses every day. Great setup for us. We would finish breakfast and walk across the street for tubing, horseback riding, zip lines, etc. The hotel staff was very helpful and extremely friendly. My luggage was delayed 32 hours and they were great getting it back to me. The rooms are clean and neat--the air co... Read more

There was a free room safe, you got the key from reception with a returnable deposit. we ate in the bar, basic pizza and chips. the breakfast had a fair selection, cereals, hot food, fruit and a staff member to make omelettes. Small quibble! I read an earlier review that claimed this is an eco-hotel, which it's not! There are pretty stringent criteria to get that award particularly with regard to water usage, waste recycling & energy generation - all of which the Hacienda doesn't fulfill. I stayed 4 nights here and foolishly decided not to get a car which meant I was stranded there of an evening with no option to head into Liberia city or outside of the national park (Rincon de la Vieja). I'd definitely not do that a... Read more

We rented a car and drove on our own so not part of a tourist group. Wide range of activities meant there was something for everyone. My teen loved jumping off the cliffs at the various waterfalls, we enjoyed the 2 hour walk through the nearby Rincon de la Vieja National Park (where we saw Capuchin monkeys, Spider monkeys, coatis, and agoutis), and everyone loved tubing on the rapids (quite a rip roaring ride this time of year). The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, especially the folks work... Read more

We stayed here for two nights at the end of our trip to Costa Rica. The hotel is very ice and clean. The room had a kind bed, a full size bed and a twin which was perfect for my family of 5. The rate was reasonable and included a buffet breakfast. The bathroom was a fair size, unfortunately they use solar power to heat the water so we didn't have any hot water for the two days we were there. We asked the front desk attendant and were told it was probably due to the solar power but someone would ... Read more

We showed up without reservations and ended up paying more than what was shown on expedia (in the past you'd get a better deal that way in Costa Rica). But we also had AC, which most other rooms did not have, though AC is not necessay in the evenings with the windows open. There is a shuttle that will take you to the national park ($15 pp to enter the park) and to the mud baths/hot springs, but we had a rental car. The zip lining was safe and an awesome experience. We then did the horseback riding. It was a very long ride, my behind was so sore the next day but worth it. The beauty of the pictures was inviting , but once you get to this very remote hotel the reality is different. The building is old and needs a touch up. The menu a la carter is awful. The rooms are clean and the people was nice. Do your research before you book a tour with them, they try to do too much and is expensive. Does not worth it.

The hotel is surrounded by lush tropical gardens. I was explained it used to be a cattle ranch home before it became a hotel and the rooms and grounds have kept that feeling. Breakfast was very good and filling ! offering fresh tropical fruits and local dishes (rice and beans, plantain). As part of staying at the hotel we had free access to the hot springs nearby. It served its purpose for an overnight stay. TV did not work. No social atmosphere. It was essentially on a farm. Look out for "visitors" (bugs, lizards) in your rooms. Breakfast was again just okay. No microwave or fridge in room. Uncomfortable beds. Hammocks out in front of rooms for free use.
