Sorry a long review but worth a read to make your mind up about coming here. On arrival after a 2hr delay and 11 and half hr flight the doors opened to the riu palace Costa Rica I was expecting nice cool air con, but nope nothing, very disappointing, go to check in desk, not offered any drink, not offered our cases to be taken to the room, first impressions now have really put in a mood, arrive at room to find it smells of damp and I mean very bad musty damp smell, we look out on balcony and fi... Location - Remote. Transportation is costly. Check in - Chaos. No queues, just a mob pushing toward the table. Suggest Riu provide a secure area for luggage, with claim tickets, instead of leaving bags unattended in the lobby. We expected a wait for our rooms as we arrived much earlier than check in time and would have explored the property or gone to the beach had we felt our bags were safe. We DO NOT leave our bags (or credit cards, or passports, or social security numbers) unattended an... Read more

May 27- June 1. The property is well kept and maintained. They definitely have a moth problem, which can be eliminated if sprayed. At night it's almost impossible to enter your room because of the moth problem ( of course they like the lights). They don't turn on the air condition in the lobby, although I could see AC vents in the front of the lobby, so it can become stifling inside at times. The rooms (I am not sure where this concept originates from, and I have seen it before only in Domini... Read more

We arrived a couple of hours late as we had a delay to our flight of around two hours due to faulty fuel valve no ones fault just one of those things, upon entering we were offered a welcome drink in a tin, Beer or soft would have been nice to have been offered something in a glass as most hotels do, we took our own cases to our room when we eventually found it, the room itself was ok although clean seemed a bit grubby around the edges just in need of decor and update, but everything was there,... I came here with my husband (both in our mid 20's) The hotel itself is nice and well maintained. The food was absolutely horrible! It was an all inclusive resort but we ended up leaving everyday to have dinner at restaurants in the local town. Breakfast was good but it felt like a cafeteria. They focus on serving by the mass not the quality of food. The alcoholic mixed drinks aren't great but the beer is good! Can't mess up beer! Stayed here from 22nd May to 5th June 2016 in room 2100. I am writing this primarily from the perspective of a visit from the UK travelling with Thomson holidays although I appreciate the hotel hosted far more than just UK guests! I have travelled to several places in the Caribbean prior to choosing Central America and have stayed in RIU hotels before. This is designated as a 5* hotel and is very nice though if you are used to 5* Mexico or US hotels then you will probably rate it lower. Rooms... Read more

I was so excited to try a RIU resort because I have heard great things. When I checked into our room, it smelled musty and chemically. There was feces in the toilet and a cockroach in the washroom. I tried not to freak; I am not one to complain, but even our sheets were dirty. I requested new sheets that evening. The staff was super nice and we had new sheets, but somehow our beach towels went missing during the sheet change and you have to account for them and pay 20 dollars for lost towels. No... Read more

Visited Riu Palace 12-27 June2016. The hotel is 40mins away from the airport. It is situated literally in the jungle and the nearest town is Coco Beach. You can go there by water taxi or local bus for $15 return. The beach was black sand and sometime it was rough. The food was brilliant, great variety and something for everyone but only problem was that it was not warm enough. I am not sure it was because the fans were on. Ill start off by saying this is a nice hotel in generally but don't think it can claim to be five star. It could potentially be five star but isn't at the moment. Ill give a brief summary below : Food : Generally the buffet food is good but felt it was a bit cold like others have mentions in other reviews. This could easily be fixed by the hotel. Food does seem to rotate on a weekly theme night but after the first week I felt it didn't vary enough and the second week I became a bit fed up with... Read more

First impressions let you know you are in a decent hotel. A large airy reception, leading straight into the lobby bar and coffee shop. It looks nice, modern and clean. Only troubles are, the full height glass windows which afford stunning views across the resort and towards the beach let the sun in all day and the lobby gets pretty hot. There is no air con in the lobby, just ceiling fans which is a slight downer. We ended up using the 24 hour bar most of the time as it was air conditioned. Also ... Read more

I read several reviews before visiting the RIU and they were very helpful, but most of the things people complain about did not bother me. The hotel is beautiful and I love that there are views of the mountains and the ocean. Yes, the room is a bit far from the beach, but that isn't a big deal. The beach is so gorgeous, love the dark sand and greenish water. The sand is VERY hot, so I am glad that I read that we would need water shoes. Just back from this great hotel. Great staff, great accommodation, incredible food. Any hotel that has tours of the kitchen, cleary doesn't have anything to hide, recommend that you take this tour. Seen a few negative reports from our "Atlantic" cousins, they must have been at a different resort, because the place is fantatic. One warning,at the time my wife and I visited it was hot, very hot, so remember to take lots of bug spray, but it is well worth the visit.

The food was always pretty good, but when we missed the lunch hours we were left kinda hungry. Everyone was always nice and chill. The rooms could get cold but the ocean view was good. Had fun, wish there were more things to do on the resort. Recommend taking a walk into the resort town to see the pretty buildings. At the beach massage I got bitten by several flies. Wear bug spray or just don't do it if you can't handle the flies. I would recommend it but probably wouldn't return.

Food was surprisingly good for an all inclusive with a large variety, poolside BBQ every day was a nice touch and the 24 hour lounge with as much popcorn as you can eat - what's not to love?! Steak restaurant was great but we didn't bother with the others. I'm sure other have probably already mentioned it b... Read more

Highly recommend this particular Riu Palace Hotel. It is paradise. 24 Hours a day, whatever you desire, served with a smile. We had an ocean--facing suite, hot-tub on the balcony, whirlpool tub in the bath, as well as a huge walk-in shower and bidet. The staff is friendly, and helpful, the food is plentiful, do make dinner reservations at their specialty restaurants, worth the effort. The pools are great and I already miss my wristband!

I went on a couple's trip (4 people) to Costa Rica from June 17th-22nd. We chose the Riu Palace because we had an excellent experience staying at the Riu in Cancun last year. The hotel met my basic expectations. The room was nice, the service was good, and the food was excellent. The only downside to my visit was the extreme insect problem on the property. This was a nice resort and my 3rd stay in a Riu resort. I thought their were decent food selection options; the grounds were always kept neat and inviting, the staff friendly and pleasant. My only complaint would be the beach area. This area lacked the typical scenery for a beach and instead was more like climbing down a dirt mound to get to the water (ocean). However, the check-in process went fairly well and we were able to get in our room fairly early. The room was neat and clean. The shower was very nice...The beds were ok, until you lie down or sit on them. The beds slide from the walls, you have to constantly push your bed up to the wall. Beautiful Hotel grounds and very clean. Staff was great and all super friendly. Very good food and great selection at the Arenal Buffet. Food at the Italian and Japanese restaurants also quite good. We intended on eating at the Steakhouse on our last night only to find out it was not open for some reason, I think maybe because it's off-season? That was pretty disappointing because we wanted to do steak and lobster. If we had known it was not open every night we would have gone sooner. Settled on... Read more

We caught fish and Ramon, the restaurant manager, had the chef cook the fish for us and presented a beautiful platter of assorted fish, it was great. I also left my purse at the Buffett and Ramon came to the show to return it to me. Such good people in Costa Rica. We ate at the steakhouse that was also very good, but ... Read more

A totally awesome resort. The staff were all amazing and helpful. The buffet food was pretty much buffet food except on the international nights. Ordered the drinks with double to triple shots and they were much better. We used CATours and it was really good too. The trip to Nicaragua was the best albeit a long trip. With it tho to see inside a live volcano. One drawback was the resort is very secluded but that's good and bad. Go if you get the chance.

The hotel is kept scrupulously clean by the hard working staff who were all really polite and friendly. The rooms and public areas were always clean as were the pool areas. Clean room, excellent beach. Nice property, very well maintained. Food in the Arenal buffet is really bad. Poor variety and tastes bad. This year we also went to Riu Palace Pacifico were food was really good.

Me and my partner booked this with a little regret after seeing some of the reviews so the day of our holiday I was a little nervous as to where I will be staying for the next 2 weeks. But I have got to say I loved it. From the hotel to the walk in the rainforests! It was beautiful! The staff were very friendly and the hotel was very clean. I found the food was really nice, massive choice with breakfast lunch and dinner. One thing I can't stand is the constant hassle from entertainment staff, ... Read more

We loved it here - thank goodness we weren't put off by the negative reviews, we didn't have any of their issues. All the staff were excellent and very helpful. We didn't have any language issues. The staff don't have any obvious expectations to be tipped, but we did tip when we had special service. The people are lovely and friendly. There was no hard selling from the people on the beach, who were happy just to chat to us. Our room was fine - comfortable and quiet. Food in the buffet res... Read more

The Riu Palace Costa Rica is a beautiful resort. The location is amazing! The pools and the grounds are immaculate. We found the beach to be fantastic. The rooms are very modern and clean. All restaurants were good, but none were great. The buffet was above average, but not great. Papagayo Steakhouse was very good, but no bar service there. Asian restaurant also quite good. Crystal offered different selections, also good. Italian restaurant was the weakest but still had very good rack of lamb. T... Read more

We visited Riu Palace in Costa Rica the week starting November 7th 2016. The hotel is located on the Pacific side of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste. The hotel is a new one and very modern. The bus transfer from the hotel was very smooth and took about 30 minutes. Once at the hotel we were greeted by staff members which offered us a welcome cocktail. They had a special check-in table set up for our group and was very efficient. Within 30 minutes we were in our room and ready to start o... Read more

We're on day one of our stay and so far not great. We arrived around 3:30pm so an in between time for food, the Papagayo has "snacks" that seemed like they had been sitting out for hours. Soggy fries, hard bread etc...the rooms look as described very 1980's Las Vegas. Our rain shower head isn't working, called down to report it and someone was supposed to be up within 10-15 minutes to check it out - that was two hours ago. I'll post another review if things turn around.

This was my 5th trip to a RIU resort in 4 countries. This was the most beautiful resort of them all. The resort is massive, immaculate with beautiful, well cared for grounds. It's located on Matapalo Beach which is a black-sand beach. The water is not clear like the Caribbean as the waves break on the shore churning up the black sand. Unlike the other RIU resorts, the beach didn't offer umbrellas. This wasn't a problem as there are large trees with branches that stretch out 30 plus feet toward... Read more

I'll put my main thoughts first because I know people may not read all the little tidbits lol. If you are the average middle class hard working person who just wants an escape and to have a good time on vacation, this resort is for you. If you are a diva who wants everything catered to you, you will get that to a certain degree. But you have to remember, if you want to be treated like a Kardashian you will have to pay Kardashian prices. Since you aren't paying those prices at the Palace, adjust ... Read more

This is a fantastic hotel cannot fault it one bit. Food was lovely plenty of choices never cold and always good quality in all restaurants. We eat in all the Restaurants and the buffet was probably the best. Rooms were always cleaned to super standard I even left a ten dollar tip for the maid on the side and she never took it the whole two weeks we were there so on the last day I gave her a 20 dollar tip because I felt that I could leave anything in my room and it was safe. I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel. The staff was nothing but courteous and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and clean daily. The only issue was hot water which we learned you had to wiggle the handle. The food was good and the variety was nice too. The pools were nice, not too overly crowded. But we really didn't use them as the Pacific Ocean was right there. A most unusual beach with volcanic sand and clear water with fishes swimming all around you. I just wished ... Read more

The Riu palace all inclusive was amazing and restful for our family which included 8 Adults and one baby! Food was good. Alcohol is was superb! Staff was amazing! Pools and activities were great. We had a got tub ocean view room, a junior suite with view and family room. All great but family room doesn't have a common area like you would expect! Entertainment and excursion assistance was excellent! Highly recommend!

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful country! Rooms are clearly made for couples; not families. There was no wall separating the shower from the rest of the room which meant that we had to get dressed in the shower. Some of the gentlemen at the front desk leave a lot to be desired by way of customer service, other than that, the staff was incredible.

This place is one of the best all-inclusives I have ever been to. It was beyond clean everywhere and the manicured gardens were beautiful. There was NO waiting...bars, towel hut, reception...there seemed to be an over abundance of friendly staff everywhere. Lots of shade at the pool provided by clever sliding canopies. No searching for lounges, there were extras stacked up! A few complaints (which didn't impact us very much)- there is an undertow at the beach (Pacific Ocean), the wifi in ... Read more

My wife and I have just spent 10 days at the Riu Palace after a 5 day Arenal and Monte Verde cloud forest tour. The hotel was excellent. Our room overlooked the forest where we saw howler monkeys feeding and fireflies at night. It was a large room with a huge bed 8 or 9 foot wide and very comfortable. Plenty of wardrobe space, a bubble bath (we didn't use it) lovely hot powerful shower fluffy towels and double sink. The hotel was kept spotless by the cleaning staff and the lovely gr... Read more

I have never written a bad review of a hotel or resort before. This is my first. I had a horrible experience with three separate customer service representatives before I finally broke and had to walk away. The hotel refused to let our tour van come to the front of the hotel to pick us up. We had to walk a quarter of a mile with our son, his large car seat, and all of the other bags needed for our day trip to the front gate. My wife injured her arm on the way. We expressed a need to either... Read more

We've stayed at a Riu hotel before and although I was following all the reviews and adjusted my expectations we were still disappointed for various reasons, some new points and tips which I'll try to address by category and rating below: Rooms 3* Yes, although this hotel is the updated style of the Riu hotels it is dated with many bathroom and wall tiles cracked, decorative pillows stained, saw a cockroach (which escaped!) in the drawer etc. Shower is large and was the best feature of the room... The hotel is in a beautiful setting and like all Riu hotels is beautifully decorated. This one is decorated in a distinctly modern way with lots of wonderful elements. Hurricane Otto came late in the season and the hotel held to their strict schedule shutting down the bars at 11:30. When you can't leave the hotel and you're trying to socialize in the common area they shut off the lights. Instead of saying last call, and letting us continue our conversations in a comfortable lounge they just ... Read more

We recently returned from a trip here with another couple. This was a rescheduled trip from four years ago right after they opened, that we had to cancel. Being that the hotel was only four years old, I expected so much more. Our room was dirty, upon arrival and had dead bugs in both the bathroom and main room. I got up in the middle of the night, turn on the light and a roach was running across the desk. Being from Florida, this was not all that disturbing, but you hope to see them dead and n... Read more

At the end of my review, I have detailed a negative experience with one manager. However, I truly thought the experience my sister and I had was isolated. I am disappointed to read other negative reviews. I try to find the good in most any situation. I found one of the receptionist to be a little short and not as friendly as she could have been. However, I chalked that up to a large group arriving from the airport and the sudden need to get everyone checked in. I was not even going to mention th... Read more

We had stayed at the RIU Guanacaste 7 years ago so we had some idea what to expect. Check in was quick and fast but they try to explain everything in 60 seconds and it was a bit daunting. The resort is very large, the grounds are beautiful, they had just had a hurricane 4 days prior to our arrival, but there was no evidence of any damage. Decided to give Riu a try and even though the Motel was very nice its just not for me. The rooms, staff and grounds were nice but I could do so much more with what it cost to stay there. If you are not a big drinker I don't see it. The food is at best average in my opinion. Not that it was bad it was just not what I expected. Very little activities planned unless you wanted to lay around the pool. Views from our room was very nice.
