Sorry a long review but worth a read to make your mind up about coming here. On arrival after a 2hr delay and 11 and half hr flight the doors opened to the riu palace Costa Rica I was expecting nice cool air con, but nope nothing, very disappointing, go to check in desk, not offered any drink, not offered our cases to be taken to the room, first impressions now have really put in a mood, arrive at room to find it smells of damp and I mean very bad musty damp smell, we look out on balcony and fi... Location - Remote. Transportation is costly. Check in - Chaos. No queues, just a mob pushing toward the table. Suggest Riu provide a secure area for luggage, with claim tickets, instead of leaving bags unattended in the lobby. We expected a wait for our rooms as we arrived much earlier than check in time and would have explored the property or gone to the beach had we felt our bags were safe. We DO NOT leave our bags (or credit cards, or passports, or social security numbers) unattended an... Read more

May 27- June 1. The property is well kept and maintained. They definitely have a moth problem, which can be eliminated if sprayed. At night it's almost impossible to enter your room because of the moth problem ( of course they like the lights). They don't turn on the air condition in the lobby, although I could see AC vents in the front of the lobby, so it can become stifling inside at times. The rooms (I am not sure where this concept originates from, and I have seen it before only in Domini... Read more

We arrived a couple of hours late as we had a delay to our flight of around two hours due to faulty fuel valve no ones fault just one of those things, upon entering we were offered a welcome drink in a tin, Beer or soft would have been nice to have been offered something in a glass as most hotels do, we took our own cases to our room when we eventually found it, the room itself was ok although clean seemed a bit grubby around the edges just in need of decor and update, but everything was there,... I came here with my husband (both in our mid 20's) The hotel itself is nice and well maintained. The food was absolutely horrible! It was an all inclusive resort but we ended up leaving everyday to have dinner at restaurants in the local town. Breakfast was good but it felt like a cafeteria. They focus on serving by the mass not the quality of food. The alcoholic mixed drinks aren't great but the beer is good! Can't mess up beer! Stayed here from 22nd May to 5th June 2016 in room 2100. I am writing this primarily from the perspective of a visit from the UK travelling with Thomson holidays although I appreciate the hotel hosted far more than just UK guests! I have travelled to several places in the Caribbean prior to choosing Central America and have stayed in RIU hotels before. This is designated as a 5* hotel and is very nice though if you are used to 5* Mexico or US hotels then you will probably rate it lower. Rooms... Read more

I was so excited to try a RIU resort because I have heard great things. When I checked into our room, it smelled musty and chemically. There was feces in the toilet and a cockroach in the washroom. I tried not to freak; I am not one to complain, but even our sheets were dirty. I requested new sheets that evening. The staff was super nice and we had new sheets, but somehow our beach towels went missing during the sheet change and you have to account for them and pay 20 dollars for lost towels. No... Read more

Visited Riu Palace 12-27 June2016. The hotel is 40mins away from the airport. It is situated literally in the jungle and the nearest town is Coco Beach. You can go there by water taxi or local bus for $15 return. The beach was black sand and sometime it was rough. The food was brilliant, great variety and something for everyone but only problem was that it was not warm enough. I am not sure it was because the fans were on. Ill start off by saying this is a nice hotel in generally but don't think it can claim to be five star. It could potentially be five star but isn't at the moment. Ill give a brief summary below : Food : Generally the buffet food is good but felt it was a bit cold like others have mentions in other reviews. This could easily be fixed by the hotel. Food does seem to rotate on a weekly theme night but after the first week I felt it didn't vary enough and the second week I became a bit fed up with... Read more

First impressions let you know you are in a decent hotel. A large airy reception, leading straight into the lobby bar and coffee shop. It looks nice, modern and clean. Only troubles are, the full height glass windows which afford stunning views across the resort and towards the beach let the sun in all day and the lobby gets pretty hot. There is no air con in the lobby, just ceiling fans which is a slight downer. We ended up using the 24 hour bar most of the time as it was air conditioned. Also ... Read more

I read several reviews before visiting the RIU and they were very helpful, but most of the things people complain about did not bother me. The hotel is beautiful and I love that there are views of the mountains and the ocean. Yes, the room is a bit far from the beach, but that isn't a big deal. The beach is so gorgeous, love the dark sand and greenish water. The sand is VERY hot, so I am glad that I read that we would need water shoes. Just back from this great hotel. Great staff, great accommodation, incredible food. Any hotel that has tours of the kitchen, cleary doesn't have anything to hide, recommend that you take this tour. Seen a few negative reports from our "Atlantic" cousins, they must have been at a different resort, because the place is fantatic. One warning,at the time my wife and I visited it was hot, very hot, so remember to take lots of bug spray, but it is well worth the visit.

The food was always pretty good, but when we missed the lunch hours we were left kinda hungry. Everyone was always nice and chill. The rooms could get cold but the ocean view was good. Had fun, wish there were more things to do on the resort. Recommend taking a walk into the resort town to see the pretty buildings. At the beach massage I got bitten by several flies. Wear bug spray or just don't do it if you can't handle the flies. I would recommend it but probably wouldn't return.

Food was surprisingly good for an all inclusive with a large variety, poolside BBQ every day was a nice touch and the 24 hour lounge with as much popcorn as you can eat - what's not to love?! Steak restaurant was great but we didn't bother with the others. I'm sure other have probably already mentioned it b... Read more

Excellent location, beautiful views. Very clean, food is great, staff very friendly. Rooms are spacious. Very helpful that ala carte Italian restaurant does not require reservation and is open for both lunch and dinner. Reservations are taken at the same place so you can reserve all the restaurants at once instead of making reservations at each restaurant separately. Tour to Nicaragua with Plus Papagayo (Yuriel and Mauricio) great, mvery informative. We also booked Mega Tour with Swiss travel, w... Read more

Highly recommend this particular Riu Palace Hotel. It is paradise. 24 Hours a day, whatever you desire, served with a smile. We had an ocean--facing suite, hot-tub on the balcony, whirlpool tub in the bath, as well as a huge walk-in shower and bidet. The staff is friendly, and helpful, the food is plentiful, do make dinner reservations at their specialty restaurants, worth the effort. The pools are great and I already miss my wristband!

We stayed at Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica, gorgeous hotel, well kept, clean, the service people were fantastic. The staff was always willing to please, the pools were great and the beach very beautiful. I saw a lot of monkeys in the area and plenty of Iguanas. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

I went on a couple's trip (4 people) to Costa Rica from June 17th-22nd. We chose the Riu Palace because we had an excellent experience staying at the Riu in Cancun last year. The hotel met my basic expectations. The room was nice, the service was good, and the food was excellent. The only downside to my visit was the extreme insect problem on the property. It was the beginning of rainy season, so I guess all of the bugs decided to come out to play. My first experience was at Papagayo. It's t... Read more

Travelled as a package deal with First Choice. Lovely hotel, decor and staff, plenty of sun beds and space around the grounds. Lots of options/ trips outside and fairly close to the hotel, we booked a great tour through a tour operator in Cocoa Beach. Good service from the Thomson Rep's whilst there but once again poor service once home, Kirsty can you please respond to our email! Will definitely visit this lovely country again

The hotel is awesome, I enjoyed the attention to all your problems and request that you may have. When we checked in there was a little mix up with our room but the front desk cleared it up in less than an half an hour. They even gave us free drinks.....hahahhahahahha...little joke it's an all inclusive hotel. The buffet is the best I had in a very long time, the variety of food and the amount of food that is presented is mind blowing.....LOOK FOR THE HOSTESS NAMED MONICA....she is the best, ... Read more

We stayed with 2 other couples for a week during the dry season. Wish that it would have been when everything was greener. The resort was clean and well maintained. Pools were very nice. Be prepared to bring extra sunscreen . You are closer to the equator so the sun is much more intense. You will need to reapply several times a day. No complaints with the drinks for the food. This was my second time staying at a RIU property in Costa Rice, the other being the RIU Guanacaste right next door to this one. There are a lot of great things about the hotel that I'll hightlight first: Great customer service - for how many people come through day in and day out, several staff members greeted us every time they saw us in a way that let us know they knew who we were, which was nice. Good food - for an all-inclusive, the food selection was outstanding. In addition to awesome bre... Read more

We stayed for a week at the Palace. The place is very beautiful, all the staff are friendly and helpful. We has a leaky shower head, they replace the complete unit although I had to ask 3 times, the dryer did not work, since I didn't really need it I gave up on that. You can see the beach from the pools area, The food in all the restaurant was very good. I would go back for sure.

I love the Riu Palace Costs Rica! Customer service was excellent from the moment we checked in until we said goodbye. The food in all the restaurants were great! I really enjoyed the Japanese restaurant for the ambiance. It was so nice not to have to fight for a lounge chair or for a bartender. This was the most relaxing trip for me. I loved the staff entertainment by the pool. Yes, I had a picture taken with Wonder Woman! I really enjoyed the nighttime entertainment. We took two tours.... Read more

We stayed 4 nights at Riu Palace and 3 nights in LaFortuna-Nayara Springs. It was the PERFECT combo. The Riu was ideal for the kids as far as pools, endless amounts and availability of food that they love, and spotting various iguanas, occasional howler monkeys near the beach. The water 1 day was crystal clear when the sun was out too! The trees on the beach were unique and offered much needed shade, as well as the chance to see occasionally an Iguana resting on a branch. They need more beer brands, they only have Heineken and Imperial (beer from Costa Rica), I didn't like the family room with the bath tub in the middle but for couples is great, for me the food and pool was the greatest part of all because they have five restaurants and the one for Breakfast and Dinner (Arenal) gives you the most variety of food. The check-in process was efficient, and we got to enjoy lunch while we waited for the 3 PM check-in time. Throughout our entire stay, the staff went above and beyond. The only reason I am giving this a three, is because the ocean outside the property is absolutely beautiful. The grounds and hotel are beautiful as well. The manager and front desk were very rude and condescending. It felt like because we did not speak their language, even though they spoke English, they were rude because of it. This was a nice resort and my 3rd stay in a Riu resort. I thought their were decent food selection options; the grounds were always kept neat and inviting, the staff friendly and pleasant. My only complaint would be the beach area. This area lacked the typical scenery for a beach and instead was more like climbing down a dirt mound to get to the water (ocean). Because of this, Hubby and I did not enjoy the "beach" area as we typically do when on vacation.
