Wow, we just loved this hotel. We stayed 5 nights and had a great time. Pros: - Great location - just in front of the Plaza Del Reloj, so one block from the door to enter the Old Town, in a great neighborhood called Getsemani. The location can't be better. You have the best of both worlds: easy to go to stroll in the walled city, and easy to dine in Getsemani (Getsemani offers a lot of great restaurants with better prices and a nicer vibrant atmosphere than in the Old Town). - So many fantasti... On our transfer to a hotel at Boca Grande, the porter left our luggage on the street and walked away.  Puff, it was gone. The hotel owner Rafael said not to worry. That they have insurance. Instead of enjoying our trip, we had to take taxis back and forth to meet with Rafael to review the video cameras. We had to go to the police station, also. To the pharmacy, paying out of pocket to replace the medication. This was on day 4 of our 16-day vacation in Colombia! That was many months ago. ... Read more

The Monterrey is a lovely old fashioned hotel. It's in a beautiful historical building which is well maintained with pool and bar on the rooftop. We spent many an hour sunbathing up there, watching the world go by below over a (very well priced) cocktail. The rooms are of a good size, air conditioned and with English speaking TV channels! Staying just outside of the city gives much more for your money. The hotel is just outside the main city gate so easy to go sightseeing any time. Nearby are r... Read more

Hotel Monterrey was a lovely clean hotel and it is pretty central to everything. Breakfast is included and it was pretty yummy. Staff was friendly. We ate at the restaurant one night and it wasn't very good. don't get the chicken cordon bleu. it was gross. The roof top pool was good. It had a great view of the city. I wish the pool was cleaner...there were lots of water bug swimming in it. but i really liked that it had lounge chairs and umbrellas because it was great to come back to after walki... Read more

Great location in front of the Reloj which is the main entrance to the old city. Rooms in front of the buildings are great and with wonderful views and they also come with a balcony but are very noisy on weekends due to a dance club/bar next door. If you do not like the noise, then ask for a room in the back

This is the perfect hotel if you want to be in the center of Cartagena and want the basics, but nothing else. There was some mysterious hair in the shower that it was not mine... Yuk!!! I left it for a day to see of house keeping would clean it but nothing! Will be staying elsewhere when I go back to Cartagena.

We got lucky and had a room with a balcony on the square with an excellent view of the old city. Cheaper than staying IN the old city but located conveniently close! Good breakfast included and lovely rooftop terrace. Comfortable bed. Great service.

After not really finding the hostel we wanted to stay in in Cartagena, we decided to look for a good deal hotel. Monterrey seemed perfectly fine for that. The location is great, just outside the city walls, and Getsemani around the corner. Rooms are big, but ours smelled pretty humid each time we entered. The rooftop bar and terrace have a lot of potential. This place could be awesome, but somehow it was very empty when we were there, which made it rather weird...

The staff was friendly and very helpful, amenities fine, rooms had everything you need. The location couldn't have been better. The only criticism we had was that the pool water was too warm --- but that's Cartagena weather.
