Started a Gate 1 Discovery tour here. The hotel lives up to the mediocre reviews I had seen before arrival. Room was okay but ventilation system did not work well in my room. Of all the hotels during this 2 week trip this one ranked rock bottom. Overall experience was that service is not a priority. This is most evidenced at the front desk and the breakfast staff. The front desk makes little effort to be helpful and while I expected language barriers I did not expect the indifference to even a... Read more

This hotel was nice to look at with good rooms and plenty of space in each room. They had no restaurants open in the evening when we arrived and the breakfast was pretty average. They just couldn't cope with big numbers all at once. Once you have adjusted to Shanghai get out there away from the hotels and you'll find everything cheap and cheerful - albeit few English speaking people. There is a gym and a pool but they won't let you into the pool without a swimming cap.!!

The hotel is very shabby. Many things in the room were broken. The conditioners in the hotel were simply turned off. The staff suggested that we open windows. But the windows didn't worked properly as well. The breakfast was rather poor. Construction around the hotel, therefore very noisy. It is not a 5-star hotel at all.

This hotel has a lot of expensive woodwork, modern glass, floor to ceiling doors, solid wood furniture, nicely appointed restaurants. It would be 5* in most other countries, if, they maintained the place. Just like so many other hotels in China this one was built and left to maintain itself. It is showing signs of wear and looks run down. However, it is good enough for most and provides a very good room for the price (ymmv on the quality of room). Breakfast experience was 2* at best. Stayed in the hotel as a part of a nexus tour. It was very disappointing. I know there was construction next door so expected workers but the rooms were a little run down and the bathroom sink was cracked. The breakfast was the biggest disappointment. There was hardly any seats and the food was not very tasty.

The room itself was ok. Missed the double bathroom sinks commonly found in U.S. hotels. Great location close to stores and restaurants. The biggest disappointment was the hotel restaurant. There were only 2 staff members working at 7p. It took 45 minutes to bring grilled salmon with 4 slices of squash. My husband's food arrived 20 minutes prior to mine. It seemed the food had to come from another kitchen. Also no scrambled eggs, bacon, or sausage on the breakfast buffet. The hotel has a m... Read more

This was the first hotel we stayed in on our China tour, and it was OK. We thought that the air con was weak, but it turns out that it is not actually turned on until the really hot weather starts (really??). The staff were good and the rooms clean and tidy. Needs a bit of a re-vamp but still comfortable enough. Close to food outlets and convenience stores.

The bedroom and bathroom were well equipped and clean and the air con worked OK. Breakfast was good, but the tables were laid with chopsticks only and it was a big challenge to find anybody who could provide a knife and fork. The staff on reception were rude and unhelpful.

Our last hotel on a tour of China. The reception looks glossy with lounge chairs, lots of space and sculptures. The rooms look ok on the surface and the bed was quite comfy. Good size bathroom. However when you look below the surface the shower door did not fit well enough to prevent a pool on the floor during use and there was mildew around the edges. The bar was in the front lobby, despite a request for service and waiting for half an hour no one arrived...I did not see anyone to serve any of ... Read more

Good hotel with helpful staff . The location is quite far away but it is close to line 8 subway ( zhongxing station ) which is 2 stops from the very famous people square. Rooms are large enough with minibar, safety box , 2 coplementary water bottles every night and clean bathroom. Few people can speak English and this is the only problem.

Mingde Grand Hotel Shanghai 28 - 30 Jul 16 - My wife andI stayed here recently on a Nexus Tour, it is a very big hotel, our room was reasonably large with a king bed. It is located in the old Shanghai area and there is nothing close by that would be of interest to a tourist except the Ferris Wheel which is about 300 metres down the road. The hotel has a Starbucks attached to it which is convenient. The breakfast was pretty basic as far a western food goes, but we were able to get an omelette. O... Read more

The hotel is very impressive to look at, inside and out. Initially we were given a smoking room, in which I couldn't breathe, due to allergies, and the staff were very understanding and accommodating, changing us to a non-smoking floor. (Even the hallway on the other floor reeked.) There are conveniences, like a Starbucks and a pool (though they are very serious about making you wear a skull cap, and you are expected to do laps only - even children). There are also oddities, like having the bedr... Read more

This has to be the worst hotel on the nexus tour. Access is not given from front door. You have to carry bags from the street up past a green and absolutely filthy water feature. The place is old. We ordered room service and its taken over 1.5 hours to get vegetarian fried rice and some puree veggies. The fried rice came with meat and the veggies were not blended. We even had the translation from English to chinese to make easy for the staff and they still messed it up. I cant see us staying in ... Read more

Very nice hotel, very pretty, comfortable rooms. Fast free wi-fi in the room. Modern decor. Very good buffet breakfast. Close to subway stop and walking distance from Joy City shopping center. Would stay there again.

Hotel is not central but for the tour we were on for the most part it worked. Rooms were a little dated but generally clean. Catering and especially breakfast are chaotic with it difficult to find a table when multiple tour groups are using the hotel. Apart from a convenience store opposite there is nowhere to go locally.

If you have this hotel on your itinerary, tell your travel agent to change it. This hotel is badly run and the staff have an unfriendly attitude. Guests are NOT welcome. We arrived at 8.30pm and wanted a drink and a snack. But all the outlets were already closed, even though reception staff told us they were open. The only option was Starbucks! The maintenance of rooms is bad with plumbing being one of the major issues, as the water in the shower overflows. Chipped furniture, cigarette burn mark... Read more

The room had a large comfortable bed and there was a tea & coffee making facility. The safe stopped working on the second day; the hotel just disabled the safe (after opening) and was not useable thereafter. Breakfast was mainly Chinese - entry to the breakfast area required the room key (per person)

We were here for three nights and found the hotel a really nice and friendly, I needed to use the internet so a member of staff allowed me to use the hotels computer free of charge. As we were leaving before breakfast the hotel provided us with a packed breakfast.

Located in middle of downtown near the subway station. On first seen the negative point is about the entrance , although this 5star hotel includes a twin 26 floors buildings, the entrance is in the disgusting dirty alley in the backside. The breakfast menu wasn't like a 5star hotel. All in all You can find some better hotels if you look for a 5star hotel in this neighborhood.

Room lovely and hotel very nice. However ordered. Room service as were out all day and there is nowhere near the hotel to eat. Nothing Chinese on the menu. Ordered a burger which was raw. Left it and complained but hotel did nothing. Only stay here if you eat before you go back.

Good luck trying to communicate or get even the slightest customer service when calling their phone number directly, I even speak a little Mandarin. I was away from the hotel and tried calling my wife who was in the hotel at the time and was hung up on twice when calling the main number. When I called the 3rd time the front desk didn't even pick-up it disconnected itself.

This Hotel has a strange entrance on a side street and undergoing roadworks doesn't help first impressions. Sadly things didn't get any better, Reception/lounge/Bar area is okay..Bar prices are deadly and as most hotels in China...they don't understand cold Beer... the whole building is badly in need of renovations, rooms are very run down, carpets stained and dirty, smoke free room stunk of smoking, shower overflowed, chipped tiles, mould...no Shampoo/Soap etc. Breakfast was as Chinese Hotels ... I paid a visit to the Beautiful city of Shanghai (not to be missed) on business and Mingde Grand Hotel ticked my satisfaction box. Room was specious and nicely equipped with a fancy glass window between bathroom and bedroom. Everything was fairly clean and the view was just nice. If you are ever in China and you don't speak Chinese, get your smart phone an app that could ease away your communication issue. Thank you Mingde and Thank you beautiful Shanghai

The fact that this hotel has been given 4.5 stars is incredibly misleading. There is no front entrance, you have to get the taxi to stop at the side and drag your luggage for about 200m to the hotel (forget about a bellboy). As soon as you walk into the lobby, there's an overwhelming smell of toilet deodoriser. The rooms are even worst. The shower is mouldy, the lighting dim (to hide how filthy the room is), the carpet disgustingly stained, the wallpaper peeling, the skirting boards cracked and ... Read more
