Minutes away from one end of the Bund this is a great place to be based in Shanghai. Shops, colonial buildings and numerous places to eat are on the door step and there is also of course the amazing evening light show from the 21st century skyscrapers. If you have lots of money to spend there are no doubt better hotels on the Bund with equal measures of historical interest but Astor still offers a door into the past. The breakfast room is magnificent and the breakfast was very good. Our room wa... Read more

The photos of the Astor House on internet booking sites rather exaggerated the hotel's allure. We were drawn to the Astor's historical grandeur and style. We selected a 'celebrity room' but the size and tenor of the room were rather disappointing - moderately spacious and not so grand and with no view whatsoever. The breakfast was so so but the staff were friendly and polite. The hotel has a reasonably interesting history dating back to quasi-colonial times in the late 19th and early 20th centur... Read more

I had the pleasure of staying at this historic hotel where so many celebrities and politicians stayed over the years. The history is magnificent. The first phone call in China was made in this hotel and there are many movies and documentaries made about this hotel. Even during my stay you can see film crews almost everyday doing some filming. Nice to experience such history. It is also close to the Bund and the Shanghai skyline and the harbor. Just FYI, this is an older hotel but kept up ver... Read more

Well! I've stayed at many swanky new hotels all over the world - steel and shiny chrome with fine floors of marble etc. Not much of any of these materials at The Astor House...nope! It's mostly wood. Lots of wood. Oh! and how lovely it all is in that regard. Step back in time and find yourself in turn of the century Shanghai - that's turn of the 19th Century of course! Only stayed for one night as I was in transit - but I would have gladly stayed for much longer! I loved the place - and the frie... Read more

A beautiful building, stunning entrance, large en suite rooms, helpful staff. Lots of information on the history of the hotel and some of its famous guests. The Russian Embassy is opposite, the Bund is just over the bridge and it is an easy walk to the main shopping area. We would definitely stay here again.

My 2nd stay in this great historical place...Its just the building and its interior that makes your stay already worth while. I was so lucky to stay in the very room where Albert Einstein stayed and there are many more rooms where famous people stayed. It would take too long to go on about the history of this wonderful place with nice creacking floors and walls covered with pictures and paintings. Yes, you probably can find a place with more luxury and even with a better service too but I doubt ... Read more

Great location, near the Bund and the beautiful Shanghai skyline view. Walking distance from Nanjing road. An old building, well preserved. Nice staff and the breakfast was OK. Highly recommended, the overall value for money is positive.

We were generally happy with our choice of The Astor House and can recommend it. We chose it for its history and reputation, and we were in Shanghai to explore my British family history, so just being a short walk across the bridge to the Bund was very handy. The main shopping street and downtown and the metro station were all an easy walk away. There was a film shoot going on in the bar by the foyer on our second night, and several evenings there were wedding parties taking place in the restaur... Read more

Love the history, grandeur & the charm of this hotel. It transforms into a 30s Shanghai. The Peacock Hall where we had our breakfast was splendid. Breakfast spread was good too & they vary the food options during our 4-day stay there. Location-wise it is about 15min walk to Nanjing East Metro Station. 5 min walk to The Bund to admire the enchanting night scene of Huangpu River & Pudong. A starbucks, a korean eatery & a pub round the corner from the hotel.
