It is a pity to find such gorgeous histhoric building managed by Chinese, could be best 5 star hotel in the city, but actually is a 2 star hotel in any european city. Nothing to say about the hotel as a bulding, but staff, breakfast, bar,..... bellow any expectation! on the border of unacceptable....

The room we stayed in was called the "richard suite", which was big and clean. The design was beautiful and it was like an old victorian style room. Theres a fascinating museum part of the hotel that features artifacts and information about the hotel's era. The downside about living in an old building is that the floor creeks and its kind of creepy at night. Location was convenient as it only takes around 10 minutes to reach other tourist attractions.

It's building is old but it has normal room and just Chinese breakfast so if you don't like Chinese food you should just eat egg. Rooms are clean and the location is good near city center but little hard to reach metro station.

It is a very nice authentic hotel just 3 minutes walking north of the Bund. A room on the top floor and on the front will give you a nice view of the Bund and a part of the financial district. The breakfast room is very beautiful and serves a good western and asian breakfast. Downside would be the slow internet and (as everywhere in China) hard beds.

Big comfy room, one of the best over our stay in China albeit not quite what we were expecting and that took the shine off the experience and the stay. No executive lounge access, no Richard bar available, city view was a construction site and staff were not very helpful when I queried this. Breakfast was average and all told although I can clearly see the charms of this hotel it did not live up to expectations.

We were lucky to be upgraded to the Richard Suite which had 5 balconeys, 2 of which overlooked to the Bund and river. Standing on the balconey felt like being in Evita! The Suite was huge and gorgeous. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. We caught the Ferry from Osaka to Shanghai (well worth it) and the terminal was within walking distance of the Hotel. Across the Bridge was the Bund and 2 bridges up (on the right) there is a good little street with some great cheap eating places. Th... Read more

We were suggested this hotel and easily found it on booking.com. We arrived in the morning and were able to get into our room immediately. We dropped our bags and walked out the front door, across the bridge and were immediately on the Bund. Great. Our room is quaint and lovely. We enjoyed the decorations and size. Neat little extras with a walk in closet, desk area, and online room service menu. Felt more like a bedroom in a friend's home. Large TV alloughalthough we didn't turn it on. Turn... Read more

Our room was large and even had a small additional room where we put the cot for my snoring husband. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms modern and the rooms were quiet. The breakfast buffet was ample with Chinese and western choices including cereal and eggs made to order. We enjoyed a snack in the lovely La Vie en Rose cafe in the lobby. We enjoyed our stay here.

We loved this hotel - great location at the Bund, so much history with stories of Albert Einstein, Margot Fonteyne and so many more! We had Margot's room! Spacious, comfortable with magnificent parquetry floor and comfy bed. Wandering through the hotel, we discovered the ballroom and many historical facts about this hotel - once called The Richards Hotel. Would highly recommend staying here - beats the modern hotels hands down!

Arrived not long after breakfast time but they still let us check in to our room. A bit shabby but clean and comfortable with great amenities and a fascinating history. It was our first night in China and, although Shanghai is quite westernised, it was a good introduction to the country. Amazing breakfast buffet with everything from steamed buns and spring rolls to egg and bacon. We had to leave early on our final morning and was impressed that the hotel packed us up a breakfast to eat on the t... Read more

Stayed here for five nights on a recent trip to China. This hotel is very old world. Lovely big rooms with lots to choose from for breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful. Good value for money. The location is excellent. The hotel is in walking distance to the Bund and nanjing road.

Historic and beautiful, this hotel was a great value on the Bund. Huge room, very clean and also so quiet. Best sleep of my trip. Easy walk to food and subway. Take time to view the museum in the third floor. Breakfast was so so, but also affordable.

Great location just a short walk to the buns and maybe about 15min walk to Nanjing Road. The guys at check in were great the ladies at check out were a little rude but nothing bad. Hotel has amazing history and definitely worth a stay. The room was clean and comfortable. One thing was they put rubber matts in the bath so you can't slip which is great but it was going a little black in places. Overall great hotel

This is a very strange hotel perfectly located next to the Bund; unfortunately they seem to have the best not to have an inch of water front , but it ok anyway as told, the hotel had a sense of vintage, more because there is no way to hide it more that a real will. But the rooms are nice, the hall is ok, the bar is incredibly expensive and the desk has my favorite check in guy; no worries, you will easy spot him, because he looks like a young Mick Jagger, cinese version of course

This hotel is very nice, and has a lot of history, which shows. You can either decide that the whole experience has a vintage feel to it or that the place looks dated. I go with vintage. Astor House Hotel is extremely well located, within walking distance of the Bund and a Starbucks. My room was clean, quite big, quiet and the air conditioning was working well. The staff was helpful and friendly. Also worth noting, the breakfast buffet was quite good and served in a lovely room. On the other ... Read more

Early July we stayed for 3 nights (all book through our travel agent) our first stay was ok, beware the floor boards echo every footstep, the rooms very nice the check staff also nice, food in breakfast again ok now the shocking service on our 2nd stay of 2 nights about a fortnight later, we arrived to check in late evening (9pm) same vouchers as previous stay all references the same. This is a historical hotel, but adjusted with all elements you need today. The breakfast is served in a room that once was probably a balroom. The atmosphere is just great. We visit this hotel twice and both times our rooms were perfect. Bathroom is spacy, the beds are good. The hotel is nearby the Bundy area and about 30 min walk to a shopping center. Breakfast is served in oriental as well in western food; plenty of choise. I would certainly recommend this hotel.

I always love staying at historic hotels. With a long list of famous people having stayed here, including US president Grant, Bertrand Russell, and Charlie Chaplain, I was very excited to give this place a try. Unfortunately, when we checked in, we were given a room that was not cleaned after the previous guests. This meant a stripped bed, full trashcan, garbage all over the room (including on the desk, on bathroom counter, and on the floor). Some of the trash on the floor included cigarettes an... Read more

This hotel, built over 150 yeras ago, is a tour in history. Every lamp, ceiling light, column head, is a reminder of times past. The refurbished Peacock Room is splendid, though its dignity seems to suffer a bit as it now serves as the venue for the breakfast buffet. The lobby cafe was enjoyable, if a bit expensive, and we had two long afternoons just sitting there, eating slowly, and reading. We were given a room on the sixth floor, and it was a bit of a maze getting there. That was part of th... Read more

If you want a moderately priced hotel right on the Bund, Astor House can be your choice. My daughter and I got a room in the old part of the hotel - an enormous room with fireplace and nice woodwork. It had an old colonial style feeling, like if you had stepped back in time.

Charming hotel just as I imagined. Room was great with a huge renovated bathroom, strangely, fitted with an automatic blind separating it from the room proper through a giant plate glass window. Not really sure of the pur[ose of having the blind up unless you like looking at the bathroom or enjoy watching people use it. We stayed in a Richard's Executive Room and after a long journey , we were dismayed that we had to walk up 32 steps to the 2nd floor 'VIP' check in. After long days sightseeing an... Read more

Given some of the negative reviews, I was apprehensive about our booking. However, I am delighted with our stay. The room is large, clean and charming. The bathroom is great, plenty of room and good towels, robes and slippers. I love the atmosphere and the history, so thumbs up from me.
