Excelent location, clean and comfortable rooms. Friendly staff. Noisy neighbours and no elevators. No breakfast but there are options nearby. But overall a good choice to explore the city. I recommend those who seek good value for the money to consider this hotel.

Good value for the money, very good location, excellent staff; hotel is quite in need of some modernization, but if one merely needs a no-frills place to stay in Vancouver, this is certainly a place one should consider!

If the thought of shared bathrooms is making you hesitant about booking, please, please don't let it disuade you!! This hotel is immensely clean, the staff are all incredibly pleasant, and the location literally could not be better. With a sink in your room and individual rooms for each bathroom down the hall, the facilities are more then adequate. Cannot recommend this hotel enough.

We chose the Buchan hotel as it was our first visit to Vancouver and only had 2 days before travelling oon to Seattle to visit our son and his wife. The location was excellent, and the hotel was clean and comfy but could do with some new paint as it was quite shabby in hallways and public areas. We had eeverything we needed for the stay and the staff were very pleasant.

Reread the less-than-favorable reviews & agree with (good) reviewers who say that if u are looking 4 la-di-da, stay somewhere pricey (and noisy, and shallow; a place that could be found in any of a bazillion cities). Came directly from airport and Buchan was easy to find with #250 Horseshoe Bay from City Center skytrain & (great) map from (airport) tourist info. Was greeted pleasantly and professionally (told about coffee and given a great lead 4 nearby Guu restaurant, THANKS!), Room (#20) is ni... Read more

Excellent location for a first time in Vancouver. Easy walk to Stanley Park and bike rentals. Nice quiet area. Complimentary coffee/tea was appreciated. Good access to public transport, restaurants and food shopping. Staff were excellent. Our room was right opposite the restaurants outdoor dining area but this did not disturb us. This is an older building with no A/C. The rooms could use a bit of TLC. Would we stay at the Buchan again? YES.

The location was great, 2 minute walk to Stanley Park & 2 minutes to Denman street which has a wide variety of restaurants etc. 10 minute walk up to Burrard for shopping. The hotel is old in decor but clean & friendly staff to help. We were on the 3rd floor & no lift/ elevator, not a problem for us but may be to others. Lovely old boutique hotel, has a great Italian restaurant below, walking distance to Stanley park ,beach, eateries . Would recommend this to people who are looking for accomodation with ambience, not clinical hotels, some rooms share facilities but ours had its own bathroom. No lift but no problem to us in our 60s. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Downtown near Stanley park is the perfect location. A short walk to the park or to restaurants. Good safe neighborhood. Everything downtown is within walking distance. Close to coffee shops and bakery. There were a couple corner grocers that made fresh local fruit easy to get.

We chose the Buchan to wind down after a Denali tour and coastal cruise. Good proximity to cruise terminal (we walked but most wouldn't). Stairs to entry and lots more stairs to rooms would discourage some. Lack of air-con on a hot night is forgiven as this is rare. Room was clean, large and comfortable, if a bit dated. Overall good value.

Location perfect as there is only a short walk to Stanley Park, around the Lost Laguna and to English Bay. Besides that - on Denman Street one block away - there are numerous coffee shops and restaurants.

Very affordable hotel. My room came with a shared bathroom. In some hotels that might cause an issue, but at the Buchan it did not. The bathrooms were very clean and never occupied when I needed to use them. The room was very clean as was the rest of the hotel eventhough it's a bit dated. The hotel is right next to Stanley park and the Downtown area is only about a 20 min walk away.

The Buchan is another 'grand dame'. Definitely a bargain - with options for 'shared bathrooms' (not as bad as that sounds) or private baths (we opted for this). Also - a walk-up (no elevators) and no AC - but all windows are newer, screened and work well. All of this contributed to the charm for us. Oh - great rates! Now to the really good stuff: Amazing location - literally 2 blocks off Stanley Park and 2 blocks from Denman. Denman is a vital and happening street with wide array of dining ... Read more

Great location so close to Stanley Park and the numerous excellent shops, cafés and restaurants of Denman and Robson Streets. You are really spoiled for choice. Walking to waterfront was no problem and you can even walk to Yaletown or Gastown in 30-40 minutes if you don't mind a decent stroll. Hotel itself is fairly basic but great value for money. Parking was one of the reasons I chose this hotel as it can be hard to come by in downtown Vancouver. However, we were there for 2 nights during the week (a Monday and Tuesday) and they didn't have any available in that time and so we were forced to find street parking and move our car every 2 hours. The hallways stunk like mildew and the rooms left much to be desired. One positive is that they have 2 fans per room, which were so helpful as there was no A/C and the rooms were sweltering. Located perfectly, priced aptly, serviced diligently.. in short this hotel just made our stay in Vancouver even more enjoyable. There can be a lot of better properties, but when you consider price, service and quality together, this place is the most optimum... The location and price is great. They don't have elevators so it is a little bit painful to carry 3 luggages in to my room on the 3rd floor. They do have storage which allows me to store my stuff when I change the type of room for the next night (for my own reason). The staff was very friendly and suggest I can leave all my luggage on the same floor and they will put them in my next room, which saved me a lot of time and effort. I enjoyed my stay!

We stayed two nights and it was nearly perfect, especially the value you got for the price was very good. The location is very good, only 20 minutes to the center (by bus) and in a nice and friendly neighborhood. Eating facilities are within walking distance. We had a room with a private bathroom which was located right to the staircase. Due to the fact that door and walls are thin we heard everyone passing by. Earplugs are provided by the hotel.;-) But this was the only minor disturbance.

convenient to Stanley Park and Denman street, which has tons of ethnic restaurants; also convenient to #5 bus downtown yet is in a quiet neighborhood. Facility itself is a little worn, and rooms have few amenities. Wi-fi signal ranged from adequate to poor. Walls are thin, and the wood hallways, although cool looking in a retro way, do little to muffle sound. No AC, which in a heat spell would be tough.

The location of the hotel was great, close to Stanley Park and restaurants. I slept really well because I was tired after a long flight, but there seemed to be a lot of noise inside the hotel throughout the night, people in the room above me, and people coming and going and talking. The hotel was really good to not charge me for the first 2 days I was unable to stay due to weather delays.

If you looking for the great location and want to spend most of your time exploring and enjoying beautiful views this is it. Guest room is very busy and you can meet people from around the world. The only thing you have to be comfortable to share showers and washrooms. .During warm days it can get hot but rooms are equipped with portable fans. We will be back more often if the air tickets would be less expensive.

I had my doubts when I booked two nights at the Buchan. Low price, considering where it sits in the placid west-of-Denman streets, and shared washrooms/showers like a backpacker's hostel? I was expecting something close to the grotty Downtown Eastside vibe (I lived in Vancouver for four years, so I developed prejudices.) I waited too long to book a room before my Northern Hemisphere trip started, though, so I didn't have much time for advance planning. First thing I did when I got to the room w... Read more

After staying 3 nights at the fabulous Burrard Hotel we moved over to the Buchan hotel as we were over that side of town. The street was fairly residential and quiet. No elevator making it a nightmare lugging 2 big suitcases up 3 flights of stairs! Our room was right next to the communal bathrooms so there was constant sound of doors banging. People in room opposite had their room door open so could hear them and people congregating in hallway talking for over an hour which was really irritating... Read more

The Hotel is located in a nice quiet area close to parkland and restaurants. While the rooms are older they are clean and well maintained. Is located close to bus route. Suitable to budget minded people.

The location was excellent and the staff was very friendly. There are so many cute restaurants/cafes in the area, and it was easy to catch a bus to the skytrain/train station. The rooms were basic and clean. I had no complaints.

It is situated close to the bus line 5, nice breakfast and dinner facilities in short walkig distance, Stanley Park and everything else so near, you could feel spoilt. The staff was very friendly and forthcoming.

We booked this hotel because of the location in relation to Stanley Park. Room was small with no air conditioning but there was a ceiling fan which made it comfortable to sleep. The hotel staff were very accommodating in that they let us book in early and provided storage for my bike.

We chose this hotel for its location, used the hotel parking & walked everywhere. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great price but not for you if you like a fancy hotel!! Great for us as we only use the hotels as a base, will definitely stay again when we're in Vancouver.

Perfect location with walking distance to lots of restaurants and Stanley Park. Quiet and charmy street. Very nice rooms and helpful staff. We had a room with shared bathroom and it worked out fine. They have no elevator, and that is the only downside I can think of. Very good value for the money.

Great value for the location. Nice common room and free coffee/tea. The hotel is old so the rooms are small and dingy, but clean and practical. The beds are small and hard, had a sore back each morning. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Excellent Service, great location - close to everything downtown, very nice rooms. helpful staff, I prefer the rooms with private bathrooms. One thing that would be great to have in this hotel, would be a kitchen area with fridge and stove, so people could have light breakfasts etc.

If your looking for frills then this isn't the hotel for you but if you're looking for a clean good value hotel in a really great location surrounded by some amazing restaurants, a supermarket just round the corner and only a 5 minute walk from Stanley Park then this is the one for you. I stayed in a double bed room with shared bathroom facilities on the 3rd floor, the bathrooms were cleaned at least twice a day and there was very little ambient noise so this was all fine. There's also a grea... Read more

Located on a leafy and quiet street in the heart of Vancouver West End, the Buchan is a great place to stay. Basic, but clean and comfortable, there is a good lounge with coffee and tea available 24/7, and towels and linen are changed daily. Location is second to none for ease of access to shopping in Downtown, bus services to West Vancouver and outlying areas, and to eateries along Denman and Robson Street. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is relaxed. We will definitely be... Read more

I booked the hotel because of its great location nearby Stanley park and downtown. A quick walk and you are at english bay, a 10 minutes drive with the bus brings you to downtown. Quiet neighbourhood, nice staff, clean room and comfortable bed.

Disappointing. Hotel old, no facilities. Bed was very hard, bathroom miniscule. No tea/coffee in room had to go to communial lounge area, often not kept up to date. Not suitable for older persons. Area was good and close to Stanley Park

I found this hotel very comfortable and the location couldn't be better. It was walking distance to so many activities and Stanley Park is at the end of the street. restaurants and shops nearby. I was glad we were on the first floor due to stairs/suitcase.

The location is great, staff is friendly, our overall experience was good. There was only one thing we where not happy with, the outdated rooms. At least the washrooms could really use a new coat of paint. Our bathtub for example was not nice to look at, the acrylic layer was in some spots completely gone, it looked terrible. The rooms would also look a little bit friendlier if there would be some pictures on the walls.

The location is ok. The room was just fine, a bit poorly decorated... No hairdryer, no coffee maker. De coffee was downstairs in the room next to the frontdesk, if you are lucky, it was empty several mornings. De bed was really hard. And it was noisy, a lot of slamming doors and a neigbor that was snoring really loudly

We stayed here for one night post cruise. It was about $15 Canadian dollars for a cab from Canada Place Pier to the hotel. The hotel was gracious enough to let us store our bag for the day. The hotel is located in a beautiful neighborhood. Very close to Stanley Park and English Bay. We walked to the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park and then took a taxi from the Aquarium to English Bay (our feet were super tired after almost four hours at the Aquarium!) where we had a great lunch at one of ...
