The hotel was clean, our room was nice and also clean. It is rated as a two star. It does need some updating but all in all it is a good place to stay. The restaurant is very nice and the food it very good. The staff is very nice. Breakfast was included in the room price and was very good. Front desk agent is on point, remembered who we were and our room number on our first morning that surprised me and the hotel was full for the ECMA's that weekend. I will stay there again..

I'm not one to share an opinion publicly but thought it was time. I've been a regular at this hotel for a number of years. Since the new year I've stayed at this property several times. I've never witnessed this property in such poor condition. My bathroom was far from clean and there were cobwebs on the ceiling and dust everywhere. The staff are not the friendliest, certainly a change in attitude from the past! I've recently learned the hotel is under new Management, sad mistake on the own... Read more

I stay at this location frequently. The hotel does not have the friendly outgoing atmosphere it once had. I called the desk for a very small issue with my room, it was lacking towels. I was very abruptly told they were busy and I would have to wait. Good customer service is all about bringing customers back and sending them away happy so they will pass along positive feedback about your business. It seems this is not a priority with the staff or management. Last year the hotel was progre... Read more

I recently held an event here. First let me say, it took 6 phone calls just to speak to someone to book the ballroom for my event. Passed to a restaurant, back to someone, over to someone. I finally booked the event with an over the phone quote for the ballroom. I asked for an email to confirm my booking, but they don't do that apparently. I figured its a small town mentality. I have held over 70 events in hotels in the past 7 years, and this was the first hotel that didn't send a contract via e... Read more

We went for a weekend as a family. First our card was charged for the whole price of the room PLUS an additional deposit. Before we even checked in. The front desk agent had her cellphone sitting on the counter with the ringer on and was using it while she waited on people. We waited in line behind two other people and they even questioned why all this money was being held on the card, she didn't have an answer to this. But she was extremely rude and was acting like she was going out of her w... Read more

Stayed for three nights at this nice hotel located within easy reach of the Centre and Harbour front area. Room clean and comfortable, excellent breakfast and friendly staff. One lady in particular, Maureen, reception desk, deserves a special mention as being very courteous, extremely efficient and most helpful especially with directions to places of interest. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Although free Wi-fi it was a bit hit and miss and could be improved. Good car parking facilities.... Read more

I found this hotel is an excellent place for Family Getaways, although this time I travelled solo to explore Cape Breton area. I have been here before. The atmosphere was significantly more upbeat than seen in my most recent visit. Staff complaining within ear length from myself and other guests. Seems more like purgatory. More scripted. Everyone acts like a machine with no emotion. Has there been a change in ownership or management, something or someone that has been thrown into the mix that would make a once pleasant place to stay, not so pleasant anymore? Spent one night here - it was very comfortable and tastefully decorated and updated. The room with breakfast cost less than $100 and had all the amenities you would want. The place also had an indoor pool that we did not take advantage of and some kind of bar/lounge which seemed pretty respectable. The location was off a main thoroughfare but quiet none the less with easy access to places in town.

Travelling as a family of four, kids 9 and 12. Loved that there was a pool and it was adequate. Not enough towels on deck however. Reception desk was inconsistent - some staff friendly, some not so much. Room was small for four people with not enough room for bags. The Hearthstone is a reasonable middle-of-the-road motel. The service is good, the rooms are clean, and the breakfast is fine. The building is a little run-down, but I'm convinced that efforts will be taken to bring it up to standard. I left an article in my room, and they have located it and held it for me. I appreciate that. If anyone from the hotel reads this, I have a suggestion: a patio outside the pool, and clear a few trees to allow a view of the harbour.

Great being able to have a sit down breakfast with individual selection vs buffet. 8 min from downtown Sydney, 2 hrs from Cabot Trail, 1hr from Lobster Suppers in Baddeck. Cons: no elevators, pool outdated, rooms shabbier but they were clean. Conclusion: cozy affordable inn with good eats.
