As a classically trained (5* & 5* Superior) hotelier myself, I am very finicky about the hotels I stay in. When you're used to a certain standard, you feel the need to uphold said standard, be it privately or on business. I can say for sure that the Palais Hansen Kempinski, exceeded every expectation I had. I was traveling to Vienna for the first time with my girlfriend for our anniversary and she is a native Austrian, though not from Vienna, she had lived in Vienna for some time and thus was familiar with the city.
The location is perfect. It's close enough to "downtown" without being obtrusive and overly loud or city-like, yet everything is within walking distance. We arrived quite early and although our room was not finished yet, they quickly "remedied" this situation by switching rooms to one that was already serviced. It worked to our advantage because we had a room directly overlooking the Schottenring, which was ideal. If you've worked in a hotel before, you don't expect a room to be finished before 12 unless occupancy is extremely low, thus I couldn't have been more happy with the check-in, as we were both very tired. The rooming was informative without being too thorough and we were quickly left to our own privacy. Our luggage, as expected, was brought up simultaneously.
I have to say everything from the rooms, the services to the amenities and dining are absolutely sublime. I quickly felt at home in our room, which was large, considering it was a standard room. I've seen smaller that's for sure. I pay attention to the details and from what I gathered everything was planned very thoroughly and from a hotel perspective made absolute sense in terms of functionality. I would love to have take the shower home with me and the bed was one of the best rests I've ever had in a hotel, period. Also the wi-fi was free and very fast, which I find to be a rarity in a hotel. Maybe I was just lucky but I can appreciate that as a child of the modern age.
I consider myself to be a very easy guest, I generally just want to be left alone and my room mostly never needs to be serviced. If I need something, I'll call myself. I forgot toothpaste and when I called Housekeeping, a dental kit was promptly delivered. In the evening we needed a champagne cooler for the bottle we had and within 10 minutes (via iPad order which is something new to me) ice was delivered to our room, as well as an anniversary amenity and a hand-written card congratulating us. That is 5 Star service to me. The only "complaint" I have was that it was merely a container with ice as opposed to something that could cool a whole bottle of champagne but I'm good at improvising.
Breakfast the next morning was divine. I've had some really good hotel breakfasts but the Palais Hansen "Langschläfer Frühstück" was incredible and diverse and in addition to a plethora of different foods from typically Austrian down to Middle Eastern, they served my favourite champagne, namely Perrier-Jouët. Perfect morning.
Tobias, who also checked us in, made sure check-out was simple and quick, and made sure that our luggage was stored for a significant amount of time with Concierge before we caught our train. It made the rest of our day in Vienna much more enjoyable. Tobias, embodied, what I want in hotel employees, discreet but attentive service without being stiff or impersonal. Once again no complaints. When we arrived again to pick up our bags and finally depart, we were instantly recognised and helped. What more could I want?
All in all, this is an absolutely amazing hotel in every aspect and next time I'm in Vienna, I will be hopefully staying here again. It was only 1 evening but thank you for making it a memorable and enjoyable one!
