I'm usually not a fan of 'arty' hotels. Most European Capitals seems to have them and they are usually shambolic, uncomfortable and 'amateurish'. However the Hotel Altstadt stands above the crowd because it houses the owners rich and eclectic art collection. Paintings, photos and sculptures adorn the rooms which are spread out over a few floors of a Viennese apartment house. Breakfast was a classy continental offering with good breads, freshly squeezed juices and a really good selection of teas... Read more

The Hotel Altstadt is tries really hard to deliver a unique, quirky experience in its art filled rooms and corridors. Some of the people staffing the reception desk were brilliantly helpful while others were indifferent. The restaurant was about the same. Great poached eggs one morning and the next morning's cook served something that seemed to have been meant for egg drop soup. The management seems to rely on personality rather than designing consistently superior experience. Another exam... Read more

We were 2 couples staying at this wonderful property in May 2016. On reception, Elena was there to welcome us and was very helpful and polite. We got a free upgrade to white Suite and Camila Suite which were both very good. The salon room in the property is very cozy and comfortable. We really enjoyed the home-made cake and tea in the evenings. There is limited option for vegetarian people in the breakfast and I suggest that the hotel starts some hot potato items like hashbrown. We had a pleasant interaction with Elena who helped us in every possible manner. From the surprise stuffed toy for our 4 year old son to gifting a farewell wafer bar, to helping find tourist destinations and to even help get an electric kettle for the room, she ensured that our stay was as memorable as possible. We were fortunate to be staying on the 25th anniversary of the hotel. Testament to the staff that the hotel is so well loved by everyone that stays, that over 300 people turned out for the celebration. The rooms are very individual and of a high standard, with the art work throughout the hotel making you feel more at home than a hotel.

We stayed in Saskia Suite and loved the space and feel of it. The staff are so friendly, especially the breakfast staff. We loved all the different little salon rooms for breakfast which ensured that it never felt busy. The tea and cake in the afternoon is a lovely touch when you need a rest after a busy day before getting ready to go out. Thank you Hotel Altstadt

Although this review is VERY past due...The beautiful Hotel Altstadt in Vienna has been on our minds since our fabulous stay last March 2016. We (family of 5 -- parents, 21 year old college student and two 18 year olds) could not say enough good things about our stay at the Hotel Alstadt. From the moment we checked in until the moment we left (stayed 3 nights) we enjoyed every aspect of the hotel and it's wonderful staff and especially the owner, Otto. The best restaurants are often distinguished by having real flowers in and around the place. This is an indication of how much passion they have for what they do; if they can only be bothered to have plastic flowers then the same "that'll do" attitude normally extends to the food but if they care enough to have real flowers, well... you get the picture. Hotel Altstadt goes to the trouble of having fresh flowers in the guest rooms and even in the elevator! The hotel is also stuffed with works of... Read more

We were really looking forward to staying at this hotel, which we booked through the SLH (Small Luxury Hotels) website. The sales pitch for SLH is that members get free room upgrades 'when available' but - just like all the other 7 or 8 SLH hotels we have stayed at over the last few years, Altstadt didn't offer us one either. The room we got was clean and comfortable but nothing special at all. It had a 'courtyard' view - in fact a view of a roof over what is presumably a courtyard, otherrwi... Read more

I have realised over the course of my travels that what makes a place truly special for us is the warmth and hospitality -- or lack thereof. Hence, our love for Italy. I have to say that overall, I found Austria pretty disappointing in this aspect. I had a conference for two days and then two days to be a visitor. A very good base for that. I had a suite, that was very pleasant. The reception is upstairs, and is beautifully designed, with very pleasant and efficient staff. Next door is one of the prettiest salons I have seen. It is divided into several areas, each with a unique design. This is the breakfast areas. There are two old slow clunky elevators around the corner from each other, which adds to the eclectic tone of the hotel. The ro... Read more

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. This hotel is located close to the museum quarter. We had a suite which was comfortable and nicely furnished. The bathroom was very small and cramped but had a tub, good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The breakfast was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had at a hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly and extremely helpful. I would definitely return.

You should offer a better briekfast. Sausages and bacon were not in prominent view. A little bit larger elevator would be more useful Congratulations for the staff. Blankets were a little bit short- if someone is taller than 1.80m

What a wonderfully stylish hotel - superlative staff are the making of it, but the decor and the breakfast are stellar too. Great selection of wines by the glass. I will definitely be back, next time for pleasure!

Staying at Altstadt Hotel you don't really feel like living in a hotel, you feel like living in a comfortable and cosy home. I like very much the restaurant area and the The Red Salon. I stayed in the apartment Sari's Home where I felt excellent. There was even a little kitchen. The breakfast is the best hotel breakfast you can ever get. The hotel is very near to Museumsquartier, to the U-Bahn, the Mariahilfer Strasse and it is situated in the Spittelberg Quarter with very nice restaurants.

a funny not day to day hotel with lovely rooms, great personnel and breakfast was very good. A good location not far from the city centre and all the hot spots. This was a trip to remember. Vienna is a beautifull city.

nestled in an old residential building the hotel offers a romantic homey feel as if you are a Viennese in Vienna. the room we stayed was quite large with high ceilings, the beautiful writing desk as well the espresso machine added more value. the staff from reception to the housekeeping deserves a full five star and they were amazing. the hotel is an easy walking distance to the underground station and the Mariahilfer strasse and a 20 mins walk to Stephansplatz. some minor downsides; althoug... What a treat. The staff is genuinely interested in your enjoying your stay. They are helpful from the moment you check in, giving you an overview of the hotel, maps s and recommendations for the nearby area, calling taxis, etc. They are wonderful and available 24/7. My room was very comfortable and quiet and had a large modern bathroom. The woman checking me into my room said the had turned on the heat for the hotel since it was after Oct 1, but if I need AC, she could turn it back on for me. Th... Read more

Located in the Neubau area just outside the city centre, the Altstadt is surrounded by interesting shops and nice restaurants (no decent coffee shops though!). One of its greatest assets is its staff, all of whom we found to be polite, friendly, efficient and obliging. We had an issue with the room we were initially assigned, but fortunately another one, which had a much nicer aspect and lots of natural light, was quickly offered in its place. The room was also extremely spacious and had lovely ... Read more
