Well. This is nothing fancy. If you want something 'nice' then this is not your hotel. The rooms are spartan, the amenities are non existent, and the breakfast is ~meh. That said, it's clean, safe and in a good location. There were no issues with bugs, no issues with air conditioner, and the patio provided a great place for a few late night drinks and chat. The location is central and makes Cairns highly accessible. While I believe that I'm unlikely to stay here again because I normally t... Read more

Have stayed here a few times over the last 15 year and I don't think anything has changed in that time. Rooms are tired, need updating, but were clean. Booked family rooms which are in the older part and above the pub so noisy. Free basic brekky, toast and boiled eggs. It is really central location though if you are on foot. Close to esplanade, Rustys, central and with off-road parking. Wont bother again though.

The Hides is right in the center of Cairns, beside a giant banyan tree, squeaking home of protected fruit bats. The staff are exceptionally helpful, even for those not staying who need somewhere to leave luggage for a few hours. Like many Australian mature hotels shared bathrooms and showers are normal. However, here, they were a bit far from our rooms and there was a feeling of tiredness about the place.

We (a family of 2 & 1 child) stayed at Hides hotel for 4 days. Staff at front desk and in Breakfast area displayed great service with a smile. The hotel looks oldish, but with a lot of charm. We enjoyed breakfast on the first floor terrace overlooking the city while and hearing loud bats nearby. We really enjoyed the central location, between the Esplanade, the harbor, the Cairns Central Mall and a great selection of restaurants nearby (sushi, Italian, Greek, Malaysian). The Cairns free wif... Read more

The staff is nice but the place was horrible. We chose this hotel quickly online as one night stay before taking off on a ferry. Honestly, I didn't like either Cairns or the hotel, but next time I'd chose something nicer even for a transit stay. We had a room with private bathroom, but it felt dirty and smelled bad.

I was not too favourably impressed with my stay here 3 years ago. This time I booked for 2 short stays either side of a trip to the hinterland. While previous standards were poor, they have deteriorated to the point of being totally unacceptable. I was staying in Superior rooms. These are not fitted out in a standard manner, except that the furnishings are crying out for some basic maintenance as a minimum. Most items should be replaced with new and modern items. Various shortcomings included; ... Read more

Reasonably renovated and clean. Good location. Most staff excellent except for one weekend male room service "maid" wh was exceptionally rude. Our pillows were taken when the room was serviced and when I asked he replied, quite abruptly, that he couldn't go and open up all the rooms to find them! In house wifi only works near reception mostly and is very expensive for 2016 - $7 for 4 hours

Having read some reviews I can't believe what annoys some princesses. Room was clean and tidy. Price was right. Location couldn't be more central. Felt like Humphrey Bogart eating brekky on the verandah. No WiFi??? Oh no! Must mean the end of the world. Maybe I should put my phone down and go see it before it ends.

Clean linen, daily fresh towel service, good aircon & fan, quiet at night &spacious uniform rooms as advertised. Daughter really enjoyed the free self-serve breakfast of boiled eggs, toast, juices, cereal, tea & coffee on the queenslander style balcony. Centrally located near restaurants & lagoon. Large building with many rooms. Building work outside during visit only heard if sitting on deck. Would stay again, but expect budget style with dated bathroom & tired cupboards/fridge. Clean, cool fun... Read more

This place is really basic. That would be OK if you were paying third world prices for third world quality. I'm being a little unfair here to hotels I've stayed at in places like Tanzania, New Guinea, Mozambique...all of which were better than this place. The pillows are flat and lifeless, and seem like they are several years old. Reception rebuked our request for replacements. The amenities are, well, almost non-existent. TV drops in and out, the fridge is damaged and has no handle, and the anc... Read more

This would have to be the most horrible 'hotel' I have ever stayed at! I have stayed at 1* hotels in Myanmar (Burma) that had better facilities and were cleaner than here. There was not indication on our booking that we would not have a bathroom in our room. Every surface feels dirty, there are stains on the walls and carpet, hair on the pillow. I am not brave enough to sleep under the sheets tonight and instead will be sleeping on a beach towel that I have packed. The room is very noisy with ... Read more

I showed up at the hotel around 9:30 one night after traveling all day and needing a place to stay desperately. The lady at the front desk, Cheryl, was super kind and accommodating. She let me see the room I would be staying in before I paid, assured me everything would be clean and informed me of the wifi information and of breakfast in the morning. Room was old, quaint, but clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very nice. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Previous times I've stayed here we were in the "motel rooms" section. This time we were in the "heritage" section, i.e. the old part of the hotel. The rooms here are more basic, but still clean and acceptable for the price. Our room had a door to the public balcony, which was nice for bringing and drinking tea, wine etc. As the hotel opens onto the main party street in Cairns, the room was quite noisy but not unbearably so. My main quibble was that my bedside lamp switch was just a piece of wire... Read more

Great location for the price. Room was very clean. Noisy everytime some else opens or closes their room doors. Breakfast is not exciting. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Onsite parking fills up quickly.

Great location however the continental breakfast is a little poor. Just cereal, juice, toast and hard boiled eggs. Room was very basic yet clean. Do a good check of your bed at night with a torch as we all got bed bugs, seems there are many other complaints about them too.. Very common up there in cairns though.

Had to swap rooms as soon as we arrived because of the frosted windows (I need to be able to see out) This was no problem and Sharon handled things perfectly. Basic room was clean. What we really loved about Hides Hotel was that we could walk to everything we wanted to see and do. Sharon on reception and Wayne in the breakfast room are warm and friendly and made us feel welcome. Cheryl on reception was totally the opposite.

A pretty dismal old place. While it has some heritage charm, the room was grungy, with French glass doors to a sort of balcony with no curtain. So a lot of light came into the room at night. I tried hanging a blanket (which was dirty) over the doors but didn't help much. The shared bathroom was clean and spacious. The breakfast adequate. The worst thing was the thumping noise from the nightclub next door and the drunks on the street all night. I wouldn't stay again, opting to pay a little more... Read more

We picked this hotel because it offered 24 hour check in and central location. All good on those points. Check in went OK. Sadly the room was very very old and tired. Sheets not too clean. Very nosiey, even on a Tuesday nite 2 am. Our flight was a long one and we really looking forward to sleeping. Breakfast next morning was OK and the staff are nice. Sadly hotel is not big on providing any real service in the former of free Wi Fi or holding bags while you go to pick up a rental car.
